I got my first photoshot tonight

one of the people that I work with, wife works in one of the best hotels in the area. Well they are having a big function tonight and they have asked me to take some photos, of the setup, lighting etc. None of the function itself.

they are using custom lighting so it will be interesting trying to get the right photos.

Well I guess my 17-40 F4L is going to get some use tonight.

a quick update

well with in 1/2 an hour, the deed is done.

the photographs are for a hotel that is hosting brest cancer dinner. the wife of the guy at work runs the hotel and since he says the photos that he normaly takes don't turn out they asked if I could.

what I get out of it, well a free dinner for 2 in one of the best hotels in the area. and I get to practice.

Maybe the 1.8/50 or 1.4/50 might also be quite useful for such occasions (checking out the lighting). I assume you'd have ne of these, as they (at least the 1.8/50) are normally considered 'must buys' for any Canon DSLR user.

interesting you say that, I have got that lense, but I did not feel like it should be used.

if you check out the my web site you will see some photos from a car show, all of which are taken with a 50 1.8 lense.

I felt that a wide lense would have been best. I thought the photos came out rather well.

They look good to me! Nice job.

The photos did come out well (at least by my standards ).

However, it's a bit difficult to judge whether the first one - which looks very nice - really captured the exact lighting of the event (which was the aim), without having been there.

Well, you were there, so you can judge it.

Just judging from the effect of the photo, it looks like a low light event to me, so I'd rather have some extra f stop available (or a tripod).

thanks for all the postive comments, the 17-40 did work well. I did take a tripod with me, which ended up being a god send.

that is one of the things that I had learned, a tripod is a must have when trying to take shots such as this. I started taking some shots of the front stair well, which did not turn out that well. You could tell that the shots was takens handheld, no matter how much I tried to steady the camera.
