these little guys tend to stay back in the thickets and branches, and it's hard to get a decent photo of one. they used to be common where i live, but have become much more reclusive as "civilization" has intruded on more and more of their habitat. this little guy was perched in the branches of some shrubbery at a local botanical garden, and i was able to snag a shot through a gap in the foliage. took a bit of tweaking in PS to compensate for the shadows, but it came out acceptably well... thank God for stabilized lenses, though! this was shot at 400mm, 1/200, handheld...

Nice capture. Apparently there is one hanging out at my local nature center, but I have yet to see it. Now I know what to look for. ;)

yep... spotted towhee. i think it's called a "towhee" because that's kinda what the bird's call sounds like...

Hmmm......we have a bird over in the UK (very rare though) called the Hoopoe, maybe thats in reference to the call it makes? Sorry to diverge ;) .
