Focus Tracking

I shoot basketball with my 10D from time to time, and use zone focusing (as opposed to the tracking mode).

Can anyone tell me if the focus tracking on the 1D would actually work for basketball? I'm thinking that the tracking mechanism would work for following subjects that don't go behind things, but in basketball that certainly isn't the case. Picture a guard weaving in and out of traffic on the court. Would the tracking mechanism get confused and lose him (or her)?

What inspired my question is that the 10D manual (on top of p. 147) tells you how to turn off tracking temporarily when something moves in front of the object you are following. I can't imagine being able to make that system work shooting basketball.

Thanks.

Mike

Using back button focus and it, will give you pretty good results.
It is a trick though...the camera will get confused, because there is so much action.
All I can tell you is practice, practice, practice...
