Newbie here...

I'm trying processing RAW pics for the first time. It seems to be the popular choice, and I figure if all the cool kids are doing it, so should I.

But, I tried opeing some of my pics in the CRW format and my old version of PS doesnt 'like them. Is there something I need to do to my PS to get it to like CRWs?

Thanks for all the help!

Tom

You'll need to convert the CRW files to TIFF or JPEG using the Canon supplied software (DPP or Image/ZoomBrowser or some other 3rd party converter first before you can import the converted image into PS 6.

PS6 will not open RAW format. You have to convert the RAW file to TIFF or JPEG first. Do you still have the software that came with your camera? I use DPP to convert my CR2 files to TIFF then finish my editing with a version of PS one version less then what you have. ;)

Boy, I feel a bit like an idoit here, but... Doesn't converting them to JPG before editing them defeat the purpose of shooting in RAW in the first place? I guess I was under the impression that I'd be able to manipulate them as RAW images... or is it just that converting them to JPG outside of your camera is better... I have so much to learn...

Confused!

Thanks again...

In DPP V3
open image
click on Tools
click on Transfer to Photoshop
there it's a TIFF image

Shooting RAW you get to manipulate the conversion to a far greater extent than what the camera can do. Moreover, you have the option of converting to tif instead of jpg - use 8 bit tif, PS6 won't support 16 bit - which is a better format for editing. You can then convert to jpg as the final step before storage.

If all you do with a RAW file is convert them to JPEG without any adjustments then yes, it is a waste of time. However, we are not saying that you should just convert them. It may be a little vague when someone says "convert them using DPP and then open them in PS 6". What they really mean is to adjust anything and everything that needs adjustment in DPP and then convert to JPEG or TIFF to open in PS6 for more editing. This gives you more headroom than just shooting in JPEG from the camera.

In2Photos... that was just what I needed... I didn't realize adjustments were happenning during the conversion process. Thanks!

Yes, I should have said to make adjustments after opening the image in DPP...just thought that would've been a given...

You're dealing with a real RAW beginner though, I even had to lookup what you meant by DPP...

I guess it's probably a given if you already know how to do it.
