I have done quite a few Costco prints now with calibration tool. I like the quality and speed, but I realize their print eats up the edge of the image (about 10-40 pix). If I crop a image to 5x7 with some object around the edge, the final print will cut those image at edge off. I spoke with a costco lab tech, she has no clue with it just saying if I order bigger print, it will eat less. Does it make sense to you? How do you avoid with those situation besides avoid a tigh crop (sometimes tigh crop is a have-to)?

Thanks.

Take a look at dry creek's recomendations on putting a border around the edge to prevent this.

Thanks for the info. But dry creek doesn't instruct me how to add pixel to it. If I like to print it out at 5x7, Should I do this

1 I crop my image to exact 5x7 on 300ppi setting then it will be 1500 x2100 pixel.

2. according the chart, it says 1535x2149, then I go ahead to add (image-canvas size) 35 pixel on width (17 at left, 18 @ right) while add 49 pixel at heights (25 at top and 24 at bottom?

Does it make sense? Thank you.

ic, I just tried it on PS2. Actually adding Canvas size is a one step process, I don't have to manual divide 35 pixel to 17 and 18, it adds 35 pixel at left and right evenly after I entered 35 behind 1500. What color do you usually use on canvas?

Also after adding 35 pixel & 49 pixel, on image size, it shows the image size is 5.117 x 7.163. Is that alright?

Thanks.

You are correct. If you have all the arrows showing it will add it evenly on all sides. Your final size is also correct. For background I use white unless another color might blend better if there is some border still showing (haven't had this happen though).

ic, if I only need to protect one side of the image and do not care the cropping of other 3 sides, for instance, top, I can simply manual add 24 pixel on the top of the image and remain the same for the others. Am I correct here. Thanks so much for your patience, Mike!

Hmmm. Not sure. It would change your aspect ratio and I am not sure how that would affect the printing. You could try one and see. I am doing a set of 4x6s right now and adding canvas to all sides by by percent. The last set I sent in I added nothing and they turned out fine, but I didn't have anything at the edges that I was worried about.

I am worry about the extra white canvas if they do NOT cut them off. I usually leave auto correct off so costco will not touch my picture at all even they see extra white canvas around... I hope not though... I am going to send one out tonight using the all around canvas setting. I'll let you know the result tomorrow.

Sounds good. I sent my order in last night as well. Will be picking them up around luch time.

I believe that the auto correct has nothing to do with cropping. It is only color correction. In order for them to not crop you have to specify no cropping during your order, but I don't want to rely on that as there is no checkbox for this.

I just picked up my shots and they look good. On a few shots there is a tiny bit of white visible at the top (about as thick as a fingernail). So the recommeded amount by Dry Creek seems right on. I purposely left some room around these for cropping but then also added the border. I think I will do this from now on as I like the results.

I picked up mine, it isn't good at all on 5x7, there are too much white bar around the print, at least twice or three time thicker than a fingernail at top and bottom. I think I am going to add 1/2 of Dry Creek recommend pixels tonight and to see what happens...
