Would I be nuts for wanting to trade my 24-70 L for a 24-105 f4 IS L? The thing is I don't shoot too much indoor natural light and would mainly use this for outdoor photography. Not sure about the IS if it makes any real difference.

I would also consider a 17-55 IS f2.8 lens but EFs is sort of a scary thing, even though I could always resell it if I bought a 1.3 or higher camera.

Has anyone here ever considered this and made the switch? Or tried them side by side or tried out a buddies and compared?

so many peple on this forum swear by the f2.8L lens' so you'll get a lot of "keep the 2.8". Yes they're great and all, but if you dont use it in low light, than you really dont need the weight and faster stop. the 24-105 seems like it suits your needs better. same length on the wide end, but 35mm more at the long end! seems like a no brainer to me, plus IS !

I wouldn't do it. If you're going to trade in the 24-70, get a 17-55 instead. It's really remarkable.

17-55 IS does seem tempting and I plan on always having a EFs mount camera as long as they make them but I am unsure. I am most impressed with the 10-22 lens I have but seems like its a wee bit short at the long end. Every time I go to the local store here, they never seem to have the 17-55 for me to even check out.

From what I am reading the 24-105L and the 17-55 IS both have 3 stop IS. Hmm very hard decision.

Liza wanna trade me? Or someone with a 24-105 IS L wanna trade? ;)

Sorry, Christopher. I already have an older version of the 24-70L. :) And I wouldn't trade the 17-55 for anything. It's that good.

I traded my 24-105 for a 24-70 once and rather quickly sold the 24-70 and bought another 24-105. The extra 35mm is really handy on a FF, and if I need something faster, whip out the primes.

That makes a lot of sense and I have two very fast primes.

Just can't decide between the two lenses. I wanna try out IS on a lens other then my 300mm. I liked the IS on my 28-135 IS when I had it. Would buy that but its pretty much useless after 105mm anyways.

Why don't you rent the 17-55 and the 24-105 to see which one you like better? The only danger in that would be if you decided to buy both of them. :)

Renatls are hard to get here and too costly. Cheaper to buy from BH and then resell it.

But I think I am more open to the 17-55 then the 24-105 after reading this review. http://www.the-digital-picture.com …8-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx (external link)

I could get one used for about $900 US or I could buy one new for $1000. Not sure which would be the better deal. And after my 300mm f4 IS L inncident from Canon I am warry of spending another $1000 on a lens that doesnt have some sort of guarantee with it.

Be wary about the digital picture. They tend to give every lens a somewhat positive review. And honestly, if your not going FF, and dont shoot indoor natural light, there's no need to have the 24-70. The 17-55 would suit you much better.

I have heard that the 24-70 is a very good lens but I sure wouldn't trade my 24-105 for it! No offence but I would much rather have the 24-105 with it's longer reach, IS, and being sharp as a tack. The 2.8 would be nice at times but not often.
