Man I think if I had the money and the ballz I would buy and own all three lenses. Everyone here has a good case, bad case, good case, good case for all three of the lens. Almost sounds like I am not missing anything not having IS on my lens. F2.8 is nice to have but shooting outside on a sunny day, f2.8 is worthless, 1/6000 of a second is way too fast so I usually shoot outside at f8 anyways and usually shoot in AV mode.

I had the 28-80L beast, it was an ok lens for a "Father Time" lens and was a 2.8-4 lens. I never really had a problem with the f4 part of it at 80mm. But I just don't know. I think this is one of those things where I should buy a 24-105 IS L (probably used) with my Credit Card. If I like it better, keep it and if I don't resell it and get my money back, cheaper then renting I think.

Egad I am in a hole now. Just bought a 24-105 f4 L lens to try with my 24-70L side by side. And I mean one will be on one 20D and the other on the other 20D for side by side testing. If the 24-105 measures up, then I think I will keep it.

After all there are some guys here that have owned 14? and counting 24-70L lenses so If I sell mine and miss it, what's the worst I can do? Buy another one. LOL

Also eyeing a 100-400L. I might like that better then the 300mm IS f4 L lens, not sure though.

if you're willing to give up lower light shooting (which you are) and willing to give up serious bokeh/depth of field manipulation, and portraits with a nice soft background...then go for the 24-105.

Bokeh is not a problem as the 100 f2.8 Macro does it better then I think just about any lenses. But I will be testing to see which one I like because I will have two for as long as I want them.

Just curious - whatever ended up happening? Did you find 24-105L as useful and sharp as 24-70L?

Here is a test someone did earlier and posted on pbase.com

Not sure if he got a soft copy of the 24-70/2.8L ... the 24-105/4L IS looks better in the test

<snip>
the 24-105L is a mediocre portrait lens and has the worst bokeh in some cases that i have seen and i seldom got that 3d IQ like i get with the 24-70L.
