Hi All,

I'm new to butterflies and didn't realise how important the underwing can be in identification, hence I didn't photograph it  .

I caught this fellow in Cambridgeshire England last Friday (27 April).

I can't identify it in any of my books.

It doesn't quite fit: green-veigned white, female orange tip, or small white.

Can anyone help ID it please?

Thanks.

Nice shot Phreddie, it looks like a Leptidea sinapis (Wood White) to me.

No it's not a Wood White - it's a worn Green-veined White.

Yes, Dave I think you're right. The body looked very grey to me hence my guess. Should heve noticed the white tips to the antenna.

Thanks for that Dave.

You say it's worn - does that explain the lack of spots on the forewings?

Thanks to you also Selby.

Your talk of body colour and 'white tips' raises a question. None of the books I've got go into such detail, is there a 'standard reference book' on British Butterflies that I should buy?
