Is it possible to crop a photo to a round or ovate shape, and if so how?

Using the marquee tool I can make the image round, but the background always shows when the photo is displayed. I have seen what I am looking for done, I just don't know how.

BTW, I am using CS2 and most definitely have lots to learn.

Not sure just what you mean by, "but the background always shows when the photo is displayed." The same bkg that was there before?

"Using the marquee tool I can make the image round," That selects it. Edit> Copy, then make a new layer & Edit>Paste it into that. Then you can put whatever you want on a layer below it. Like this?

Frank, thanks for the reply. One example of what I am trying to accomplish is that I would like my current avatar round (or oval) instead of rectangular. I can get the image round but not the background. Your example still shows the rectangular white background, and it is this background I am trying to eliminate.

You need to save in an image format that supports transparent backgrounds, such as GIF and PNG. JPEG doesn't support transparent backgrounds so that's why you can't get a circular image with JPEG.

Example- This is a red oval saved as a PNG file:

I'm not sure I understand what your trying to do and what is the final destination of your image will be - but I'll add this.

to get a transparent background you should save your image as a .gif - that way when it's displayed on the web - whatever the background is will show.

Beautiful, the answer, not the red oval (though it isn't that bad). ;)

I will give that a shot.

Hey, Hey, Hey
Check out the new GIF avatar. Thanks again everyone.

I also learned in another thread how to copy the colour of the side panel where the avatar is selected and use that as the background in a JPG to effectively blend it in when used.

I feel much smarter now. ;)
