Long shot question perhaps, but has anyone used White House Custom Color with a Huey Calibrated monitor, only to get results back that were too dark, and then upgrade to an Eye-One2 Calibrator and get proper results from the same White House Custom Color?

Don, I haven't used WHC but are you using an option for them to color correct the image? If not do you have a profile from them for soft proofing?

Toney, what WHCC does is allow you to send 5 images to be printed as 8x10s to compare your monitor with their printing. I haven't sent any images the normal way, and I don't know whether they make corrections to the samples. I didn't download a profile...but I think I will.

I emailed them about this discrepancy and a rep got back to me saying she thinks I should invest in an Eye-One2, as Hueys provide inconsistent results with their printing. I wanted to see if anyone else has been in the same boat as me. I'd hate to spend the $220 if it doesn't help. But it would be money well spent if it really does make a difference.

The weird thing is my Epson prints match my monitor pretty well...yet she is saying I need to get a better calibration tool.

Downloaded the profiles. Am I supposed to be looking at these in "Relative Colorimetric" Intent? That's the only way the proofs look closer to the prints...

You should use the profiles for softproofing in PS.

Based on that first link alone it looks like I was/am on the right track...relative colorimetric shows me what WHCC will give me (or at least very very close).

After reading some of those links and fiddling around a bit, it dawned on me why the prints look so different. If I turn on gamut warning and adjust my saturation under the WHCC profile to bring it within range, it looks exactly like the print. If I then switch to the Epson proofing profile, it still looks the same. HOWEVER if I undo the desaturation, put it in the Epson proofing, and turn on the gamut warning, it's still within the range.

So basically, the Epson can print to a wider gamut than WHCC. There's nothing wrong with my screen.

If you have large parts out of gamut, Perceptual might be a better choice.

It was just the brightest part of a flower on the image I fiddled with. Basically just brought it in line with how my WHCC sample looked.

Just a side not with using MPix. They recommended using Rendering Intent: Perceptual with Black Point Compensatior checked.

Interesting. Maybe their profiles are set up differently...? I don't really know much/anything about it since I always just used the Epson provided ones to print here.
