Yes, I paid $200+ w/ tax through Dell, and today I received Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. I used the free trial and liked it and bought it.

I was offered CS3 today from a student who saw the LR box and I said; "no thanks". I told him I would get it when I had the $$ to spare. He looked at me like I was nuts, but I told him those days were over for me.

I also picked up Scott Kelby's Lightroom book and registered for his Seminar in NYC next month.

Congrats. LR is a nice program. Although I only beta tested it, I still like it.

Congrats! You sleep so much better when you know that you have paid for all your software. I also refuse to pirate software and, with time, I've got all the tools I need. Latest addition was DxO Optics Pro, I choose it instead of LR...

Wonderful program. I can't say enough good things about it. Let us know if you like Kelby's book. I might pick one up.

I am so glad to see this happening! I started going legit on all my software few years ago and have not regreted one bit of it. It takes longer sometimes but does make you feel better and dont have to worry with all the tricky updating and worrying about software sending home info etc etc etc. Congrats on another person who has grown up!

Until this year I have never had to buy software. My dad always has extra software that I get to use. He works as a programmer and several of his company's clients often give him software that they won't use for one reason or another. He was given 3 copies (legit cpoies) of XP Pro of which I received one and always get's Anti-Virus and other utilites as well through his company. I hated the idea of having to spend money on software (he doesn't get any photo software :( ) but I have bought a few things this year (Lightroom and Acronis True Image so far) and it didn't feel too bad.:)

I get that same look from alot of people when I refuse to do that too...

I complain about the prices as much as others... (CS3 is just WAY too much for me.) But I felt Lightroom was worth the $170 I spent... it and Elements combined may hold me off from feeling the need to go to CS for quite awhile... I'm appreciating how much I can do with my photos in RAW without overusing special effects and filters in PS.

With all the dough I spent on software since '83 I could buy a couple 1 DS MkIII bodies and a few L_enses. Having written and sold some software, I realize some of the effort and expense that goes it software development.

But just today, a software package I bought Jan 31/07 says my licence has expired. I looked on the site for info on this program and low and behold, I did not purchase a program but a ONE year licence to run it. Must be new math - I figure Feb, March, April and a couple days in May is less than ONE year. Oh well, that program, REGCURE, is a piece of garbage anyhow.

What's my point? I certainly hope Adobe and other major players do not start product licencing on a time period basis or I'll be stuck using what I already own. The idea of software rental sounds to much like taxes to me.

Time based licensing... yuck!... lets not give them any ideas... :) I sometimes don't even download free 30-day trials because I'm afraid it won't be worth the effort to download and then remember to uninstall, much less PAY for on a recurring basis. (I guess pay antivirus software uses that method though, doesn't it?)

The other big thing lately is the whole web-based software craze... (I think there is even an image editor now.) I'm sure there's a use for it... but am I the only one that owns a laptop, and isn't connected to the internet 24/7? Not to mention hard drive-space nowadays generally isn't the concern it used to be... 100-200mb for a word-processor that ALWAYS works, internet or not, isn't a large storage price to pay.

LR & PSE5 = a great combo.

Enjoy LR and all that...

Just to throw one more in on the piracy note...I have someone I know well that I trust and they asked me when I got my new Mac if I would like a copy of the Office for Mac suite, if I didn't have a problem with that sort of thing. I told them that I wouldn't need to do that and went about buying it. You know, some folks would never think twice about lying to you about anything, but in the next turn, try to get you entice you to steal. Interesting...

The funny part, is because I buyed Raw Shooter Premium back in the days, I have a free copy of LR because Adobe brought the company! In a way, it's a good deal, but I don't like LR. Seem too cumbersome. I prefer RSP. But if I buy a new camera, I will have no choice since it will no be suported by RSP.
LR is good software, it's just I don't catch the way it's interface run!

Too late! Yearly license fees and time-based licenses are splattered throughout the industry. They're less common on the desktop although a close look at the legalese provided with your software can give a nasty shock (you usually don't own anything more that a right to use license which is non-transferrable, and revokable)

Take anything I say with a big pinch of salt ... I don't know what I'm talking about
