Ive done a lot of thinking, but this is just soo damn confusing. Ive seen both samples of Tammys and Siggys but cant make a final decision. Can you guys please tell me one last time which one to get? Also, I like to shoot automotive (static) and walkaround.

Thanks in advance!

-Kenny

I would easily go with the 17mm lens for your XT. There is a significant difference between 17mm and 28mm starting point on your small-sensor body (about 18mm FOV difference). The more appropriate comparison should be between the Tamron 1750, Sigma 1850, and Sigma 1770. They are all good with their own pros and cons.

Thanks for your input Light, but it would make it easier if I changed my sig. Because I sold the XT LONG TIME AGO, and just finally purchased a 20D.

Doesn't change anything with the 20D. Still a small-sensor body. Everything I said earlier still applies. Don't neglect the new 1850 f2.8 "Macro" from Sigma, as it is very sharp and reproduces a 1:3 image. Not too shabby.

You can find out all about my thoughts on this lens here http://www.pbase.com/lightrules/t1750qt (external link)

I'm using here in Maui for a family vacation, and so far it's doing the job. I don't know that I'll end up keeping it as there are some things I don't like about it (AF noise/speed, some inconsistent AF at the wide end, etc.). But overall it's a good lens with good IQ. I'm very much looking forward to the new Tokina 16-50 f2.8 that is coming out at the end of this month.

You will also find tests at my site on the 1770, which is another good choice. Really, you can't go wrong with these good lenses.

If you were going to pick up a wider lens sooner than later I'd go with the Tamron 28-75 + WA lens. The tamron is pretty speedy in the AF department, versatile range, fast constant aperture, pretty close focusing, and small/light with good IQ and color. If you want something that starts wide (for automotive, landscape, etc) look at the smaller brother, the Tamron 17-50 - it shares most of the same attributes as the 28-75 and has quite a following here.

For one lens to do it all, the Sigma 17-70 has close focusing and an awesome range. Good color, contrast, and sharpness. It's a fast f/2.8 on the wide end but slows down as you zoom out - if that's no problem this is a fine lens for your uses.

It's hard to say without knowing the other lenses in your lineup, one of these 3 lenses should be a no brainer as they're all excellent at what they do and are reasonably priced, great bang for your buck.

I got the 17-70 because I'd like to shoot landscapes. The 28-75 would be great if you don't need to shoot wide. I've seen the samples, read the reviews and they all say it's one hell of a lens. Eitherway I don't think you'll go wrong IQ-wise. If your store has an exchange policy why not try one then exchange it if you're not happy.
