Was gonna go with the crumpler 5 MDH, but thinking its too big. And the 4MDH is too small, so I cant find a happy medium in crumpler.

Want to hold:

30D (no grip)
10-22
35L

Thats it. Maybe a filter and some extra memory cards but thats it. I don't want it to scream camera bag either. Just for my travel to Italy, I dont wanna be weighed down all day while I'm out. Thanks in advance.

Have you thought about just buying a side bag that you feel is the right size for your trip and buying inserts for it?

I think you should get the Crumpler and be happy, I am sure you will add gear to fill it up in the future

domke ALL the way. I believe the f-3x is one of their smallest. simple canvas bag with two "loops" on each end to store lenses and room to toss the body and lens in the center. discreet, cheap, functional, and lightweight.

there are quite a few domke fans on here (myself, Jon (the mod), and more everyday). Do a search for domke bags here and you'll find all sorts of praise.

I'm travelling for a year through South and Southeast asia where my camera gear can cost as much as multiple years' salaries of the people in some of the places I am, but I never worry about offending or gaining unwanted attention because no one knows I'm carrying camera gear.

That might even fit in a Domke F-5XB. They're very low-key, too.

Do they offer any padding? I'm looking at these domkes and it looks like a gym bag with no padding. I like the look of them, as they're definitely low key, but will they protect my stuff from walking around all day?

F5's got padding. The bag inserts have padding as well. But I've been hauling gear around in them, including the original one which didn't have padded insertts, for getting on for 30 years without damage. And don't forget the stuff in the outside pockets takes up some of the shock from any impact.
