Well I was looking around to try to price out a new camera and I came across this: http://cgi.ebay.com …43454QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)

Is this worth the money? My wife actually gave me permission to buy this, I just have to sell what I have now which is no biggie. I am not that great with the RAW yet but I am still learning, but from what I have read this is a great camera and better them my current Digital Rebel.

Any input is welcome.

Kevin

I wouldn't buy anything electronic off ebay; this is the area where the most fraud occurs and Paypal always wiggles out of helping you once you've been scammed. If you're looking for a deal try to pick up a refurb from one of the trusted dealers.

I haven't had any problems buying used electronics from sellers with good ratings. However, I have noticed with cameras, there is one catch. AVOID ANY E-BAY CAMERA SELLER WHO IS BASED IN BROOKLYN OR NYC. They are one of the many bait and switch companies. I found out the hard way that the bait and switch camera shops use different names on E-bay, so you can't look up their seller ratings through bizrate/etc.

Smaller camera shops in other locations normally sell used items through e-bay. I have had good experiences with them as well: it's mainly NYC that you have to avoid....especially if it looks like some great offer for a new packaged deal, or some "save money on a refurb" scam. They may refuse to send what they offer in auction, and demand more money for all the accessories. That's the classic bait and switch they do.

Barclay's is a regular store you can call and order this direct from just like B&H. If the Ebay side of it bugs ya just call them! As far as the auction itself, some of the items included are funky unless they are all things you need. If you look around a little more you will most likely find something with better glass and less stuff I'll call for a similar price.

Yeah, the other bait and switch companies in Brooklyn have "storefronts" too:rolleyes: Abe's is the most infamous. Not worth it to be burned IMO: only trust worthy NY shops are B&H, J&R, and Adorama IMO:

notice a lot of the complaints are specifically from E-bay.

OP, if you're looking for a good deal, I would stick with Amazon. I haven't had many problems with Amazon's linked sellers. They'll also list refurbs. What lenses do you currently have? If you're starting from scratch, then maybe you should get a 30D with kit lens:

Or you could just get the 30D body and get some seperate lenses. These two from Sigma seem like a good deal. They probably won't offer the best quality, but they should still be fine for starting out:

I am with the consensus here. I would stick with reputable official Canon dealers. This might not be a bad deal but when looking at it there is a lot of stuff I dont know if I would use or I question the quality. For example the filters. A good filter with quality glass will cost a 100 bucks or more, sometimes much more. The flash is another thing that is suspect in my eyes. I cant tell you much about that lens but the kit lens (17-55) has its limitations. It can take good photos but you have to understand its range and it is a poor performer in low light in my opinion. Tripod max height is 42 inches which I wouldn't use. Hard to say about the cases they are offering. I know I wouldnt/didnt buy anything like those. Some of the stuff you could use, the memory but that is generally cheap bought locally. My guess is you will get this kit and love the camera but hate the accessories that are coming with it. I would look at B & H or Adorama and get the 30D with perhaps a 430 EX and a nice lens. I would get the nifty 50 in place of the kit lens or along with it, and then look at some of the better lenses that arent Canon (to lower costs) to add to it. Might cost you a 100 more but I would bet you would be happier in the long run.

Good info although I did not read thru it all. Did not know you could go ck out a sellers rating like that. Never bought from barclay and sounds like I never will now! Die hard B&H man and once in awhile Adorama myself. Call them up and I'll bet they have something similar to the above offered package or I bet they will even tailor it to your needs

With the exception of small purchases up to a couple of hundred US$ or so, I'd probably not buy from Ebay. It's difficult to trust people online. One of my friends was sure he did all his research and looked up the buyer's ratings before buying a laptop computer. I advised him against it but he went for it nevertheless. He never saw his money again, nor see anything come out of it.

I doubt you'll find many package deals like this: there's some really odd items and I'm sure this particular auction is going to be one of those "Barclay's great deals" where you'll never see any of the items until you pay more for the accessories! That wide angle converter looks particularly cheap and useless. Tamron makes good lenses, but you don't have anything in the 50-70mm range with the included zooms. With a crop camera, I would be sure to have at least the 28-75mm range covered for your everyday range. That link for the two Sigma lenses I gave are a better option IMO: They have all your critical lengths for a crop body- 18-200mm.

Take a close look at what you get in this package. You get a 30D Kit and a pile of junk you will have to quickly replace or never use.

You can save money by going to one of the more reputable online vendors or buying used here or on FM.

I buy off ebay all the time, never had a problem. Bought my first 300D, my 20D, and a couple of lenses.

I'm not sure about others but I bought from Cameta several times off ebay and they've been quick, sold great products and always took care of me whan I needed to call them.

Follow the golden rule and read their feedback before purchasing, that's the reason it's there.

Granted, I think that half that stuff isn't needed and you can get a 30D body off there for under $1000

good tip, I'll add carefully read terms and conditions. read the policy in case it's defective and in the case of small stuff... don't throw the original packaging away until you're absolutely positive it works...
