Just wondering if there are any ill effects of long exposure times. I have heard of issues of the sensor heating up. I'd like to do some 5-6 hour exposures.

The sensor will probably heat up a little. CCD sensors will demonstrate this to a greater degree, I believe. Besides heating, expect to see more hot pixels in your picture and possibly increased levels of noise.

I've never needed to do a Bulb exposure using a DSLR in real life, but did try doing a 1 hour exposure with the 1D Classic with the body cap on just for the heck of it. I was surprised that it didn't take much power from the battery.

Couple of DSLRs, number of lenses and other stuff... plenty short on talent.

Are you doing star trails?

Sensor noise and power will be the issues taking a shot that long. Some astrophotograpers use a series of many shorter exposures and combine them to cut the noise levels.

Anyways, my avatar is a 10 minute wide-angle shot of the Milky Way I took with an XT.

I've done several 15-30 minute exposure but as mentioned the noise does tend to jump in there at that long even thought I have long exposure noise reduction turned on.
