Don't know about a different hood, but the one for the 85 isn't that bad! As a bonus, I use that same hood for my 50 1.8 MK1. Never had a problem with it coming off while in use. Not sure if it would also work for the 50 1.8 MK2.

You can upgrade to the L hood, but it costs $125.

No seriously...it's a hood. ;)

I don't particularly like the 85 hood. All my others are bayonet mount - I have to think about putting on the 85's hood.

I had the same reaction recently. The bayonet seems much faster and sure to put on and take off. The only alternative that I've found are those that screw on to the filter mount:

Hi Mary,

I'm not a big fan of the hood on the 85mm f/1.8, the 50mm f/1.4 or the 50mm f/1.8. Unfortunately the only alternatives are those third party (Dot Line, for instance) that screw in and many of them are just soft rubber so that added level of protection bt the hood is gone once you do that.

I think we're stuck using what Canon offers, but you'll get used to it and forget about it after a while. :D

It's worth the minor annoyance. The 85mm f/1.8 is one special lens.

I just bought one today. I had heard good things about it and am starting to do more portraiture.

It is truly an awesome lens.

The 85mm f/1.8 is such a pleasure to use. Fast AF, silent, sharp as hell, great color. I love it.

The 85 is a great lens, but I agree the hood has to be one of canons major mistakes. Close behind their lens filters, tripods, monopods, and bags. The hood comes off almost as easily as it goes on so do not count on it for any protection in case of a bump, etc...
