Has anyone used the black and white ink sets available from third-party (e.g., Mediastreet) with the Canon i9900? If so, how's it working for you and what paper(s) do you use?

The Canon ink gives an excellent color match to the grayscale on the Gretagmacbeth color checker so I would not see an advantage in using grayscale inks to replace the colors. Atmospheric haze in images? Click for Tutorial to Reduce Atmospheric Haze with Photoshop.
