I am going to ask a stupid question. I use the regular SanDisk card-1G. What is the difference in these other SanDisk ones-UltraII/ExtremeIII ect. I guess I havn't been following these but I have seen them in the stores, but not sure what the difference was. Also, someone told me that some cameras you can't go above a certain "G", like a 2G card for example. I have a Rebel XT. Any suggestions or explanation of the difference of these cards? TIA

Some older cameras are not capable of using more than the first 2gb on a card. This is simply a problem with the file directory structure that existed when the camera was developed. You can actually format the card on the computer and in most cases use the entire card...but if you format it in camera, you will only be able to access the first 2gb.

The difference between the Ultra, Extreme and regular cards is mostly a product of read/write speed. The Ultra and Extreme cards will work a bit faster in camera than a regular card. If you shoot a lot of sports or action photography, the high-speed card might help. For general purposes, the regular card will work ok for you.

These days with memory being so cheap I struggle to find reason not to go for a top branded card like Sandisk or Lexar ... wasn't long ago that the no-brand stuff was very good value in comparison. Not so these days. The Extreme III are pretty good bang per buck IMO.

(snip)

Last year I got a Kingston 1GB card for my 300D and found it to be pretty slow to save, also slow in burst mode after 4 shots.

A few weeks ago I got a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II - it's *much* faster.

Now I can shoot 10 shots in burst mode - 4 at full speed and 6 more at 1 second intervals. Not bad for the ol' Digital Rebel.

Your XT writes faster and will probably take lots more shots in burst with a fast card.

Thanks Dan and Js! That makes more sense to me now. Does anyone know what the amount of card is the max for the Rebel XT? I would love to get a bigger one as long as nothing is affected. I am going to Alaska in June and would love a fast card w/more space to save my pics.

I have the same card and in the XT it gets 6 shots, then 1 shot per second ad infinitum.

I suspect you could get many more in burst with a faster card.

A couple of years ago a friend got an XT with a 2GB fast CF card and he said it would take burst shots without stopping. Not sure, but I think he said he got 30 or 40 shots before he let up on the shutter.

I *think* he said they were all at full speed...
