I have been playing with the snapshot feature in LR. On some pics I may convert to BW and then to one of the other presets and make snapshots of each style of the same pic. However when I go to the library to convert & export I am only seeing one of the mods done to the pic. Is there a way to export all snapshots of the same pic at the same time?

Thanks
Greg

Greg,
What you want to do is instead of creating Snapshots create Virtual copies and appy a different preset to each one. Then when its time to convert & export just select the ones you want to export.

The files will look something like this Image001-Edit-1, Image 002-Edit-2 ext.

I agree, virtual copies are the way to go for this type of editing. To create a virtual copy, right click the image and select Create Virtual Copy.

Alllrighty then. There is something else new I just learned. Thanks so much for the input. If I understand correctly I would create the virtual copy off the original, then apply preset/adjustments, then save correct?

Yes. Create the virtual copies and then in Library module select all of the virtual copies to export. A virtual copy is just like having another photo, but without tying up the disk space.

Greg,

A bit of additional information; for images that require processing in Photoshop, for me that’s usually healing and cleaning, I’ll start by processing the RAW or JPEG scan in LR then right clicking and choosing edit in PS/CS-2 this creates a PSD copy of the file in LR and also opens it in CS-2. Once I’m finished cleaning it in CS-2 I save it then close it, doing this update the PSD in LR with the edited done in CS-2. I will then create the virtual copies and apply the B&W and/or other alternate processing to the different versions/virtual copies.

Or a TIFF depending on what you set as your preferences. Good point Mike.

Mike.

Hey Mike, I have a few questions that have been bugging me about similar aspects of file management in Lightroom. Any ideas would be helpful.

  • Do you then have to manage multiple copies of the same image?
  • Do you completely remove the original RAW from the library and then work exclusively on the PSD?
  • Do you stack each set of images?
  • What image do you keep as the top of the stack for export?
Thanks for your help!

I know you were refering to the other Mike but let me try to answer these for what I do.

1. There are multiple copies but when you right clicked and chose to edit in CS2 there should be an option to Stack with original. Make sure this is checked.
2. I NEVER discard the RAW image. Disk space is cheap, what is 7Mb going to give you down the road? What if you want to do something different later with the image?
3. See number 1.
4. The original RAW is usually my top image, but I can export any or all of the virtual copies/stacked images. I don't have to export the entire set. Instead, expand your stack and click only the images you wish to export.
