I just got an invite from a friend in Indy to go to one of the practice days. We will have pretty good access to get really close... in the pits, behind the wall, pretty much whereever. Its a huge venue, and I've never been there. I'll be flying in for the day, and so I don't want to blow this opportunity.

First question is what gear to bring? I have a lot of stuff, and don't want to be carting around my 400 2.8 all day if I don't need it. I'll bring a couple of 1DMk2Ns, so which lenses... here are the choices...

400 f/2.8
200 f/1.8
135 f/2
85 f/1.8
50 f/1.4
120-300 f/2.8 Sigma
70-200 f/2.8 IS
24-105 f/4 IS
24-70 f/2.8
17-40 f/4
24-85 f/3.5-5.6
15 f/2.8 Fisheye Sigma
100 f/2.8 Macro
TC1.4
TC2

I'm thinking the following... 2x1DMk2N, 1x580EX, 200 1.8, 70-200, 24-105, 17-40, 15 Fisheye, and both TCs. As much as I'd like to have the 400 in the bag, it will be a lot to cart around all day, and I really don't have the proper travel bags to bring that, along with all the rest, on the plane. I can cram what I listed in a big bag. Thoughts?

Next is where to go for shots? Since it takes a while to move around, I'd like some advice on where to go at the track for the best shots. I'd like to get a fisheye of the whole track. I'll probably try to shoot some close ups of the cars coming down through the pits, and as they are getting in and out, etc. What about where to go for the best track shots?

The last remaining area with an open view of the track, without a fence in the way, is on the inside of the third turn. That's where the longest lenses will be the most useful.

Other inside turn shooting positions are behind fences, and you'll have to aim through slots where the fence fabric has been removed.

Telephoto lenses are still useful in the pits for tight shots of drivers, but you'll be able to get good use out of normal and wide lenses.

I'd be tempted to bring only the 120-300 f/2.8 Sigma, the 24-105 f/4 IS and the 17-40 f/4.

In the pits, always look upstream, stay as close to the inside wall as possible - the wall near the big inside fence and the grandstands - and be aware of everything that moves.

Examples of what is possible:

Unless they've closed it off, the top of the pit road suites going into turn one is a great place to shoot early in the day. You get the cars just as they hit the banking and dive into the turn. Not crowded (at least on Pole Day '05) and you can shoot over the fence. Took this one on a cloudy day, first time out with my 70-200 & 20D at a racetrack, so someone who knows what they're doing should be able to get some great shots from there.

Thanks guys... those lenses would definitely be easier to transport than the big whites... great shots you both have.
