Help with black clothe in portraits

I want to be able to take some pictures of my daughter that are B &W. I have a black clothe to lay her on but the clothe still has texture in the pictures. How do I get that solid black look that most portraits have.

My suggestion would be to meter off a gray card, then use manual to adjust to the metered settings in camera. If you do this, you should have very little blacks fully lost and your camera won't try to push the black to gray.

In order to achieve even black bcgr. you have to consider 3 things, 1st shallow depth of field, 2nd selective lighting of the subject, and 3rd and last postprocessing (cloning, dodging, masking etc.). On many occassions you won't need PP if you use first 2 rules correctly.
