Well, I'd just had a long winded post drawn up to explain in full detail every step on how to take apart and clean the selector knob but due to lack of thinking I didn't write it in notepad and copy it over so by the time I was done writing it, my session timed out and I lost it all while trying to preview
so...
Here's a shorter version.
Remove batteries and CF Card.
Remove the 7 screws holding the case together. Two on each side, Three on the bottom. One is behind the rubber cover. Note that some are coarse thread and some are fine thread so remember where they came out of.
Open the CF door and the back should come off starting at the bottom.
Fold the back open. Be carefull of the two ribbon cables.
With the back at the top you'll notice two shiny protective covers inside. The one on the left has three screws that hold it in, the one over the CF card slot has two. Remove both covers. You'll have to move the lever that releases the CF card to the right to gain access to the top right screw.
Remove the black button on the CF card release lever. Slide the lever back to the left.
The circuit board should lift up from the top now. Be carefull of the copper at the bottom right.
You can now see inside the back cover a single screw that holds the selector knob in the case. Remove that screw. There's also two metal pieces that the screw holds also. No need to remember the orientation of the metal pieces or the selector knob. They only fit one way. Look at them and you'll see that one side of the opening is bigger then the other to match the center post of the selector knob. Just remember the copper one with the "legs" goes on first.
You should be able to pop the selector knob out of the case now.
While looking at the outside of the back cover now you'll see a copper piece used to hold the selector in each position. With the open end at the top, the right side is free, the left side sits in a slot. Lift straight up to remove it.
Now you can clean everything up, reassemble and it should be good as new.
Make sure to clean the metal piece on the back cover also. I had a chunk of stuff on the "tip" of it causing all my problems.
One thing I can think of to help is to use a little magnet to magnitize the screwdriver tip for reassembly. Made it a lot easier then trying to get my hands in there to set the screws.
Hope this helps,
Shawn
