Click the mask, hit Cmd-L (levels), adjust the black point to make the black 'gray'. It will then show more of the layer. You can also tweak the contrast of the mask this way.
VIOLA! Fantastic. Works great. In fact, in addition to adjusting the mask opacity with output levels, I discovered that by adjusting the levels controls on top you can tweak the feathering on the mask edges.
