Had a search and found loads of stuff to do with painting effects in Photoshop but not a lot to do with this lighting effect in landscapes.

How may of you have done it and if so can you offer any tips? Going to Le Mans for the 24hr race in June and seeing as it's difficult to get car shots there unless you have a media pass I'm going to be trying some alternative work. This is one thing on the list.

So anyone who'd like to share their shots, links to stuff they like or any tips would be most helpful.

Cheers, Dave.

Erm, I have tried all sorts of Googling and struggled to find examples, half the reason I posted was in a hope that you lot on here could provide some links and examples.

Long exposure stuff at night, running around like ninjas lighting stuff up on purpose with flashes and torches etc...

Cheers, Dave.

I saw an article about this in Outdoor Photography's last issue. It's a really fantastic idea! You set up a long exposure and take a flash light and literally go around painting the scenery with light during the exposure. It turns up with some really amazing and quirky light plays. The example from the article that I can remember was a landscape shot with a series of cactuses. The exposure was quite a few minutes. While the camera was set up on a tripod taking the shot, the photographer ran up to a bunch of cactuses and shined the flashlight up and down them, and moved onto the next. Rinse, repeat. I had no idea this was even possible until I read that article. Anyone on this site tried this effect? I'll look around the magazine's website for a link to an article about it.

Here's a website for a photographer from the magazine who paints with light during long exposures. I'll keep looking for more info on it for you.

http://www.michaelfrye.com/ (external link)

"Photographer Michael Frye is an expert at the technique, which can offer a new perspective of a familiar scene, as in this example of the often-photographed Delicate Arch in Utah. This image was made in two separate exposures with the camera stationary on a tripod. The first exposure was about four seconds at ƒ/16, taken at dusk. The second exposure lasted about 10 minutes at ƒ/4. During the second exposure, Frye “painted” in the details of Delicate Arch, moving the flashlight beam around the rock to evenly expose it."

This is John Snell's gallery on the website. If you scroll to about the 14th frame in the series you'll see a shot of an arch he did. It's done with a long exposure and going in with a flashlight to highlight the arch. Great stuff.

It's really fun to do, I have a 25 Million candle power spotlight that has an adjustible beam angle and you can paint stuff really fast with that sucker!

I'd like to do it in a dark room with flowers and stuff, I think that would be loads of fun too.
