Dug out a 15 year old Teleplus 2x converter to try out with my 400mm f5.6. I normally use a 1.4 tc but decided to see if the 2x is as bad as people say.
Must say I was suprised by the results.

Very nice shots, and your TC works better than my Canon or Sigma TC's ever did.

Great shots Roy, they look nice and sharp to me. The Robin stands out just great. :)

Thanks for the comments Guys. I know the shots are not aesthetic but it hopefully shows that a 2x tc is usable with this lens.

You're certainly getting better results with the TC than I do, but I'm not using a Canon 2X and suspect that's a major part of the problem.

Hi, J. Palmer - just had a look at some of your shots with the Bigma and tc, great stuff. I have even tried stacking the converters eg 1.4x and 2x and the results are very good.

VI, don't waste your money on a Canon TC, either one. I had both the 2x and 1.4x and neither gave even barely acceptable results on the 100-400L IS or the 400L Prime. I don't know what it was, but they were brand new and so was the 30D and the 400L. I used them from the tripod and even a beanbag to be sure they were steady, and they just would not provide nice sharp shots. I got better results from a borrowed 1.4 Tamron.

Great shots with the 2x. I hear the new Kenko Pro DG 300 1.4 x does good also. I am thinking about getting me one and giving it a try on my 400.

The lens was wide open (f5.6) I believe but by my reckoning the f5.6 lens with a 2x + 1.4x converter would be working at f16 (I think!).
