Lightroom is a great program to grapple the basics of photography and processing. Many think it's all you need.

ACDsee is good. DPP is ok. Gimp if you are a linux user.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Download the free trials of Photoshop Elements, Photoshop CS3, and Corel Paint Shop Pro. Try the all out and get the one you like best.

Without a doubt, Lightroom is an excellent program. If you are going to convert and not do anything much beyond cropping and compression it is an excellent choice. If you are going to want to do selections inside of your image to do specific things to them then you will need something beyond this. I would suggest starting out with elements and then you can always grow into the full blown photoshop if you want. There is Gimp which is made to look and feel like photoshop and is free. Paint Shop Pro has alot of fans as well.

I do use Lightroom though it is not yet my preferred converter and then use photoshop as I like to make my changes via adjustment layers in photoshop.

Most, if not all, of these programs have try before you buy programs so you can experience them first hand to see if they will work for you.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I have both Lightroom & Photoshop CS2. I usually bring the photos into Lightroom to make some corrections, then into Photoshop for cropping and any final touches

I guess I should have added that I mainly use lightroom. But it sounds like the OP wants to do more than lightroom is capable of.

Photoshop Elements 5 is very easy to use but has some advanced features. I don't think you'll regret giving it a try.

If you don't want to spend the money, then I think DPP is a pretty nice app.

For free software, Picasa does a very good job. I'd give it a try if I were you before spending money. Very easy to use.
