Sorry if this question has been asked before!

Can anyone tell me how I can change the default sharpening in LR to zero. It's set to a default amount of 25, but I prefer to sharpen in PS using USM.

Thanks!

I think thats set on your camera with those picture styles. I have the same problem, but didn't try it out yet. I just put the value to 0 manually and do USM in Photoshop.

Hope this helps :)

I've set the sharpening level to zero on the picture style, but when I download the images from my camera, it still sets 25 in LR.

It's just a pain having to set sharpening manually on every image to 0 :(

Well, what you can do, is make a preset which only adjusts the sharpening value and use that first on every shoot, and then start doing the other stuff in the develop module.

It isn't a great solution but it might work faster than adjusting it manually.

I have found that LR's sharpening is so ineffective that if you just leave the preset as it is at 25 it has no effect . I then created an unsharp mask action and imported it into LR so that it does all my sharpening at the same time as exporting to a new folder...it only takes a couple of minutes instead of wasting loads of time...

How did you do that? Did you create the action in photoshop and then save it in the export actions folder?

How do you then select it so that this action takes place upon export?

Yep thats it, creat the action CS2, then change it into a droplet, have go to your desktop, then drag it into the LR exports folder.

Right when you go to export, right at the bottom it lets you coose what to do with it...like open in PS etc....you'll see that your unsharp mask is now in there.....the really cool thing is you then select all the photos you want to export and sharpen click export and it does the rest for you ...how cool is that not to mention time saving !

Within Lightroom there doesn't seem to be a way to have the sharpening at 0 by default. I don't understand why they did that and I also don't understand why they didn't program LR sharpening to mimic PS USM.

The LR sharpening does have some effect but it's not what most of us would want and not nearly as powerful. It is more like PS Sharpen that USM.

One way to set the sharpening amount to 0 on all the pictures within a folder, is to go to the first picture in the folder, set the sharpening amount to zero on this one, the press ctrl A (on a pc) to select all the pictures in your folder. While you're in the develop module, press the sync button, then uncheck all, and just check the sharpening option. Then, when you press zync, all the pictures within your folder, will have a sharpening amount of zero. Voila! Hope this made some sense....

Yep, that's how I've been doing it. Just a shame that you can't set it to 0 by default.

You can set it 0 as default.

Drag the slider over to 0. Save that as a Develop preset. Then when you import images, in the import dialog you can specify that new preset be applied to all images. Voila 0 sharpening as your default.

Wow, I have to try that right now. ...............

EDIT: It's a beautiful thing. That works perfectly. Thanks.

EDIT 2: Just don't click the Reset button in the Develop module. It will restore the Sharpening value of 25 and the other default settings.
