I have a 'Zero'd' Preset I apply to all images on import.

I only ever sharpen for specific things too; local contrast, sharpening eyes, sharpening for print etc... so I almost always sjust sharpen in CS2.

Here is an interesting artical re LR sharpening and '25'

http://www.oreillynet.com …s_with_the_number_25.html (external link)

here is a quote of one of the paragraphs.

" Lightroom subjects every RAW file to a demosaicing algorithm that includes purposeful blurring to help prevent color fringing by slightly blending adjacent pixels. It uses information specific to a particular camera model to do this and the number 25 represents the optimal sharpening strength applied to a RAW file for that camera. "

Apparently, insiders have said that Sharpening is going to be one of the first things that gets improved in a 1.1 update (who knows when that will be?) But I doubt it will be selective sharpening, probably more along the lines of edge sharpening, or an unsharp mask... but that's just speculation.

The whole point of sharpening in LR is that it isn't output sharpening, but capture sharpening. Hopefully there will be output sharpening in a version which is a free upgrade from 1.0 :).

Thnks for the advice, however I think I must be missing some steps or configurations. I create the action, create the droplet and put in the LR exports. Then when I export I select my action as a post processing step. Is it normal that this then opens photoshop to run the action? I exported 20 pictures and ended up with 20 images in PS all of which had to then be saved indivdually. Is this what you experience?

PS should still open. The droplet is only telling PS that your action needs to be run. If you don't want the images open after sharpening then recreate the droplet and make sure you chck the box that says Save and Close. This will save the files at the maximum quality in the folder that you exported your images with the filenames you used upon export (so it is overwriting your unsharpened, exported files).

Does anyone do a mild sharpen in Lightroom, then do an unsharp mask to the exported file in Photoshop?

For those still wondering about setting default setting to 0, you can select an image, hit reset, set the sharpening to 0 and go to Develop menu > Set Default Settings. You would need to do that for each CAMERA you use, and you can turn off the ISO/serial number specific defaults in preferences.

And yes, dirt lover, ideally you'd allow LR to do a Capture Sharpen which offsets the inherent softness caused by the camera and the demosaicing applied within the raw converter, and then apply output sharpening in PS depending on what your output is to be. Bruce Fraser's the guy the google on this one.

During import I set the preset to "general, zero'd" which is a preset that is already part of LR
