It is my understanding that this species is quite common across most of the states but I hadn't even seen one before a couple years ago when I went south to the Columbia River area. Still haven't ever seen them much north of Vancouver, Wa. Beautiful birds but they have some of the strangest set of calls, one of which sounds like tearing sheet metal, have to hear it to believe it.
Here is a 3rd image, I like the pose but not sure it meets the same level of quality as the ones above, primarily due to shadowed lighting and change in the background.
