I perfer to have the screen mode set on Standard vs. full. But every time I close a image the next comes up in full. How do I set standard as the default?

In standard you can move images around and decide which one to edit and close others, by seeing more than one image at a time

Isn't it set to standard screen mode just by clicking on View > Screen Mode > Standard Screen Mode?

I like to have in standard mode so I can move the small windows around and compare which ones I might want to edit.
Once I enlarge one to full screen by using the max button the view is changed to full screen mode.

This did not happen in CS2. I could max a image and when I closed it the others would still be there in casaded windows.

Oh, I see. Sorry, I can't help since I'm running my CS3 on a Mac and it's behaving the same way CS did as far as window sizing is concerned. Hope somebody else can chime in to help you out.

Anybody know if there is a way to set up custom workspace in CS3 so that once I max an image to edit and then save and close that image so CS3 will go back to the screen mode where the remaining images are in Casading windows as they were when first opened??

I think you can still save/recall a workspace in the Windows menu?

I don't have CS3. Look in the Windows menu for "save..."

I was wondering the same thing as the OP. It's a bit annoying having to change the screen mode everytime I want to see all the images I have open.

Just use the shortcut key "F" ... only takes a fraction of a second. I thought saving workspace also saved the screen mode, but I haven't looked at it that closely. To save the workspace, click on workspace and choose "save workspace". I know it saves the way you have the tools setup, as well as menus and keyboard shortcut changes if selected.

it's not saved workspace we're talking about. say you open 10 images in photoshop, and they cascade open, you can resize the windows move them around, see all the images at once. if you then choose one image, and enter fullscreen to work on it. once you close it, instead of the remaining images being in cascade mode, the next image automatically enters full screen, meaning you have to change back to standard mode to see all the images again. This wasn't the case on previous versions of Photoshop. It's a minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless.

Pete, thanks you said it better than I did. I also think it is a real annoyance, and hope somebody can come with with a way around it. I want to be able to see all opened images at once

I have not yet installed CS3, but won't the "F" key do the trick, as suggested by another poster? That is, when you have the fullscreen image, just tap the "F" key until you get the screen mode you want. It works that way in CS2, anyway. It is not exactly what you are asking for, but it is a fast and simple way to get back to seeing the individual file windows.

Duder puts it quite well.
I do want to add that in CS3 (at least the beta), you don't have to tap 'F' multiple times to 'go back one screen mode', you can instead tap shift+F once.

Still, it's an annoyance, since it's not possible to work in full screen mode, and go Window > Arrange > New window for ... to see for instance the image in full screen mode, with the same image above it (or on the second monitor) to work on a mask... (by alt-clicking the mask in the 'new window' image). In CS3, the 'new window' is also opened in 'full screen mode'. No workaround that I know of.
