Hi!

I was not sure should I send this to Canon EF and EF-S lenses, Accessories & Storage, or Birds forum but since my question is about accessories I choosed this forum.

I just (at last!) decided to purchase 100-400L. Got it a week ago. I was testing this lens last July and since that I have - literally - been dreaming of it! It's my first L-glass and I love it! Also the push-pull zoom is amazing. This osprey is one of my very first pics by this lovely lens. The bird was quite far and I used monopod + Kenko 1,5x TC, and the AF still worked (quite well).

My question: I have 350D with grip and Manfrotto's 055PROB-tripod + 468MGRC2-ballhead and 681B-monopod + RC2/323 quick release adapter and with them I noticed that without TC the tripod mount is too close to the grip, that is, the plate's quick release switch has almost no room to open. It touches the grip before it is fully open which makes it very difficult - almost impossible - to use quickly. Has anyone else this problem? And, is there any easy solution for this? Has Manfrotto higher plates or something? I have also Manfrotto 141RC2 3-way head and with it there is no problem. But I prefer ballheads.

I appreciate any suggestions.

may be a dumb idea but can't you just switch the direction of the head or plate?if you put the plate with the groove pointing backwards, wouldn't that put the quick release lever facing forward?

That is a good idea - I just tried that and it works! Thank You. I was so used to that with 141RC2 that is not always possible, but - of course - it is possible with ballheads. How embarrasing that I didn't notice that myself  .
Maybe I just got excited of my new lens. Thank you once more.

This forum is GREAT!

Also that works but is a slower way than blonde's suggestion. But I'll keep that on my mind. Thank You.

Why not just mount the plate so that the quick release lever is on the side. That's how I always used to use my RC2 place and have never had a problem with it. And having the lever to the side (left side, AAMOF) makes mounting and unmounting the lens or camera a lot quicker.
