I would like to find a method within photoshop to make the white color transparent....

I am working on a comic book- look project...
I start out with a simple image, make a new layer and use filters:
Styleistic:find edges
then
sketch: photocopy

This leaves me with a B&W image layer over the original.

At this point I would like to make the white areas clear/transparent

if I reduce opacity I loose the strong black lines I am looking for...

I know I can make it transparent if I convert to gif or otherwise but I would like a method to do this simples than having to re-open it.

Ideas???

Change the blending to mode of the "sketch" layer to Multiply and that'll make the white transparent while retaing the black lines.

Thanks guys

I have played around with both techniques and find them less than ideal for my exact situation.

Custom Layer masks make it hard to write into a generic action, which I hope to do after I have fine tuned my process.

The multiply option also darkens the overall image and I am finding this reduces the effectiveness of the black lines. If I reduce opacity on it then I am also reducing the opacity of the black lines....Arrrgh!

Anyone know of a simple way to make the white transparent within a single layer in jpg?

Double click the top layer.
You get a window like this:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

Move the top white slider ("blend if this layer") to the left to make the white transparent.
Alt-clik the slider to 'split it up' for a smoother transition.

(on the image this is done with the black slider; had this image online for an earlier Q)

AFAIK a jpg does not allow for transparancy.

I must have misunderstood what you are trying to do. I thought you had a layer that was a B&W "sketch" as a result of doing a Filter > Stylize > Find Edge. If that's the case, if you change the blending mode of the B&W sketch layer, the layer underneath this layer (which would be the "normal" image layer) should show up normally through the part of the sketch layer that is white without any change to the underlying image. The only part showing in the sketch layer should be the black "lines".

...... AFAIK a jpg does not allow for transparancy.

You can extract part of a jpg and the background will then be transparent ... it will then be an RGB image and you are right -- it can't be saved as a jpg with a transparent background -- it must be saved as something else -- I usually use psd until I get to the final product where two or layers are blended together and then make it a pdf file because I use them in pdf publications. Also, make sure that the final product is flattened or its size will be about three times larger than necessary.

This is the way. Simple. It's built in. No tricks needed.
