Thanks Dave
I think it is there now and I learned some more new stuff - thanks for the tip I'll bookmark X-Rite webinars now :D
Jamie

And the first 15 minutes of that webinar is a great simple explanation of why color management is necessary. Of course, it was presented by X-Rite so they plugged their line of calibration equipment.

I want to report that I did my first printing from LR4 today and I am really delighted.

I have had an ongoing problem with LR2 and 3 of dark prints. The experts all say "monitor too bright," but my monitor is calibrated and turned all the way down to 90 cd/m^, which is substantially below the recommended 120 cd/m^. And it printed properly from other applications. I tried various remedies - a work-around in the driver, custom curves that I applied just before printing, brightening presets, including one from Matt Kloskowski, etc. - but nothing ever seemed right. I know from seeing complaints in various forums that I was not the only one. Well I'm glad to say that Adobe has responded to the problem in LR4 and the Print module now contains adjustment sliders for Brightness and Contrast. These adjustments are made in the application-to-printer data stream so you don't see any change in the preview which remains as you edited it. Consequently, you have to do some testing to find the proper level to get a print like the preview. I finally settled on +20. This together with the ease of fine tuning a soft proof virtual copy to the printer profile has made printing an absolute delight.

Free Lightroom 4 Beta tutorial (external link) on Lynda.com

I had a couple of crashes while trying LR4 Beta so there is some work yet to be done but I really like the enhancements, the monitor settings for printing being just one of many.

LR4 Beta virtually unusable. Crashes on every entry to the Develop module.

Thanks for that link Elie, I will report it. I have reported each one when it happened with full comments on the report. I am going to download and re-install the beta today and give it another try.

9 crashes in one day, all in the Develop module.

Well, so far the feedback site for Photoshop has been far more frustrating than LR4 Beta.

I'm beginning to wonder if Aperture isn't the way to go.

OK - tried some testing. I exported a group of photos from LR3 to a LR4 Image Folder. I then went into the LR4 Image Folder and stripped all the xmp files, basically starting over on them.

LR4 Beta has been up and running for over an hour now with no issues.

If anybody has been wondering what really is different in LR4 that justifies the title Process Version 2012, the answer is Edge Aware Local Laplacian Filters. O.k., now that you're dying to know more, take a look at this:

and click on the illustration at the top of the page.
Download the pdf if you are really brave.

Only £59 for the upgrade direct from Adobe and you can get 8% cash back on that price (or the full version price) by going to the Adobe site via TOPCASHBACK (external link).

I prefer the full version, don't have to constantly install software if you have to re-install. My 2cents

You don't have to reinstall the previous version. You just need to supply the serial number for the previous version. The installation package is the full software. You are simply paying a reduced price for an "upgrade" key instead of full price for a "full" key.

There is no "partial" installation/version of Lightroom.

Huh? So the "upgrade" is the full version?
