Huh? So the "upgrade" is the full version?

The upgrade is the full version, as is the academic version.

Also, the upgrade doesn't overwrite your older version. You can have LR1, 2 and/or 3 as well as 4 installed on the same machine(s), although you can only run one version at a time.

Don't you have to have a previous version installed to use it? (I know its a silly question, but it goes back to microsoft windows/office)

No you still get a full version of LR4. Upgrading just means that you pay a cheaper price for it.

Even if you had a previous version installed and then uninstalled it the serial number will remain listed in the Registry and when you validate LR 4 with an upgrade key it will search and find it. If it fails to find the old number, it will ask for it.

Once LR4 has been validated the same thing applies; even if it is uninstalled the record of the validation will remain in the Registry and it can later be reinstalled without problem.

Updating to "dot" releases (from 4.0 to 4.1, for instance) does not require revalidating.

I just bought the upgrade for LR4. I have LR3 installed.
I have a friend who has LR2. Will the upgrade to LR4 work for her to jump from 2 to 4?

So long as it isn't the same product key, I saw on the website, that you they are able to upgrade from LR2 to LR4

If anybody has been wondering what really is different in LR4 that justifies the title Process Version 2012, the answer is Edge Aware Local Laplacian Filters.

This makes me feel better about upgrading :)

The only problem is that ACR7.0 from LR4 isn't compatible with CS5's ACR, and there is no update from Adobe....just got my copy today

Lightroom 4 has editable RGB curves, just like in CSx.x
To access it, you go to the curves module, select edit curve points and there is the Channels underneath the actual curves, default is RGB obviously, with the Red, Green and Blue channels under the drop down menu

Is there a way to view an image with various crop factors? For instance, a single outline that represents a 4 x 6, 5 X 7, and 8 X 10 crop. This will let me know if a certain crop will work for the image without having to manually check each crop aspect ratio.

Something like the photo outline in this thread:

Well, in Lightroom using Virtual Copies is an effective and efficient way of creating different "versions" of a pic without needing files for copies. It's pretty quick, you can right-click on a pic and choose Create Virtual Copy, then just crop the copy to whatever aspect ratio you want. The original (and other virtual copies) stays the same.
