hey all.....enjoying lr2 now! Question:
I import say 30 pics. I develop them all and then export to a separate storage hard drive for somewhat safe keeping. Now, I am done with these photos unless I want to go cs3 or paint shop. When I load lr2, it brings up everything still, all the photos I already exported and edited. How can I prevent this or is this just lr2's way of saving my pics?

This is the way LR works... its catalog is a way of organizing your pics. Thats why it has the extensive keywording system... its a way to sort through potentiallly thousands of pics when used. (But note that the catalog does not CONTAIN your pictures, just links to their location on disk.)

Depends on your workflow, but you may be better served using LR a little differently (and a bit more as how I see it was intended.)

See, all your edits are stored as text instructions in the LR catalog... completely non-destructive. You really don't NEED to export your images and take up more disk space at all until ready to print, upload to web, or further edit in PS. That's one of the powerful things about LR... you can do you LR editing (even multiple version of same image) and not need extra files filling up your drive. As far as backups go, you would still want to backup all your pictures... but also be backing up the LR catalog to external drive, as this is where all your edits reside.

My backup drive is a mirror of my pictures folder on my local machine... same file/folder structure completely. I also backup the LR catalog to that location. If need be (reinstall of OS, disk crash, etc) I put my folder structure and catalog back in place, and when I open that catalog in LR, edits and everything still in tact.

- note... if all this doesn't quite make sense, you may want to see if your local library has any of the LR2 books by Scott Kelby or others. They've got some good real-life workflow examples.

I've slowly been convincing myself that I NEED LR2. My genuine need is not until my next wedding which isn't until March, but it'd be fun to begin playing with it.

My question, though, is that given LR2's age, isn't it likely that a LR3 is not far off? Has there been any talk about a major upgrade?

Not sure on the upgrades or what LR3 will have...no money for it so I am not lookin! I can say that LR2 has immensely helped me save some user error shots/lighting and helped my processing 10 fold!

Hi,

is there a template 'icon' file - for the Lr logo with the grey background, like Lord_Malone has, so that its easy to go in and just change the letters and keep all the gradients and fonts. I want to create an icon like that, but I am hoping to find a file with the layers in it, so I can just edit the text and not lose the gradients and colours.

Thanks

I looked for the answers, sorry if they are here, I can't find them. I took 2,100 pictures on November 7th of a mountain bike race. Here is what I need to do. (they are done, I think i did the hardest way possible) I would like to load the JPEG (i shoot RAW but not enough memory for 2,100 raws) files into LR and find the easiest way to Tag, rename or what ever the JPEG to match the Race plate number on the bike.

I load them to my site by race number, thus making it much easier for the racer to find themselfs on the site. Right now I load them to LR, open each picture, click on the file name in the Metadata screen and change the camers file name to IMG_1234.Jpeg. load to my smugmug site and have the site sort by file name. But it seams to take me forever. I hope there is and easier way. Like a box i am missing that i can just throw the number in and when exporting click on something to have that box do the work for me.

The way I work it is after doing all the edits I need (CS4 & LR2) and exporting to it's final format to a drive that is backed up. I delete the files from the LR2 library by right clicking on that folder and choosing delete. I don't keep the RAW or unedited versions as I have no further use for them.

However, I am not a professional photographer so most of my stuff is just family pics etc. If I were to do something I was being paid for, I would keep the RAW versions as well.

Agreed. I will need to go through my lr2 library folders and delete them. I have jpegs and RAW for some clients or future PP work saved on a storage drive.

Not sure I understand you correctly what you want to do, but seems one way to tackle this is to use smart collections. Since you will need to go through each image anyway to identify the race number, you can add the number in the keyword field (the box you are looking for). After this, create a smart collection for each race plate by using keyword attribute. At this point, LR will automatically collect all the files of that plate for you and put in the collection (no manual copying or anything). Go to that collection and export them with the new name pattern, you don't even need to change the filename in the LR (you could if you want though).
Here is another way, depend on how scattered the photos are and how many plates you have, you can also run multiple imports. Each time you import only photos for one plate, add the plate # in the keyword field when you do so. The rest will be the same in the workflow.
By the way, there is a plug-in for smugmug that allows you directly export from LR to the site in case you don't know that.

Thanks! I'll give that a tire next race I shoot. Had no clue there was a plug-in for the two. I'll be looking for/into that!

Sticky this!

No, Sticky this!!! ;)

Question, which I don't see in the topics.

I replaced my second monitor on my Mac tower. I'm no longer seeing the pic I select in LR on my main monitor on the second monitor. Why? The second monitor works perfectly with every other program as an expanded desktop.

Where is that setting in LR for second monitor?

mark

Since I only use Lightroom for processing, that is indeed where I perform my sharpening, but I try to keep it subtle, rarely increasing the sharpening amount to more than 50, and I mask quite aggressively so that I am not sharpening noise. I then use output sharpening on export to finish the job.
