Hmm, my initial response was as to whether you got a new camera that is not supported by LR 3.x, but when you say you can't install LR4, then that presents a different problem...!

I tried to update a laptop to LR4 from LR3 and it had problems because at the time I was using a "public" internet connection. I'm not sure what the problem was, but when I moved to a different system, it updated fine..!?

I don’t think the update to 4.X is related because I’ve been having the failure to import before I tried to update. I just think it curious that it won’t update, even over my secure personal Internet connection.

How are you trying to install LR4, by hot installing over LR3? Maybe uninstall LR (but make a note first of the registration number, found in Help) and then run a registery cleaner, like CC Cleaner before trying LR4 again.

Also, regarding the importation problems, where are those files located? How about if you transfer them to your HD by other means outside LR and then import using Add?

A couple other things you can try; creating a new empty catalog and/or deleting the Preferences file.

Importation is usually done straight off of my CF card as soon as I plug it into the computer. It prompts before it imports anything, so I have the option to select what I want, but it used to always open LR as soon as stuck a CF card into the slot. Not anymore. Via Windows, I can still see my files on my CF card, but LR doesn’t want anything to do with them. Well, more accurately, as soon as I hit the import button, LR stops working, so it’s not like it’s refusing to read the CF card; it never gets that far. On my other computers, importation works fine as always with the same CF card(s).

I haven’t tried Add nor have I tried deleting the preference file. I’ll look into this.

I love Canon!

A problem that I have seen frequently on several forums is that the user designates a destination folder which has restricted write permissions (usually restricted to Administrator) - often without the person being aware of the restrictions. It seems to happen more in Macs than Windows. In this event LR usually puts up a notice saying it can't read the file(s), which is misleading because it is the writing that it is the problem. It is possible that an obstacle of this sort could crash LR.
However, my guess would be in faulty communication between LR and the OS. When you press the Import button two things happen; first LR sends a call to the OS asking it to copy the file(s) from the card to some location on a fixed drive - it is the OS that does the heavy lifting, and second, LR writes a notation in its database of the name of the file, its source camera, its format and its 'As Shot' WB multipliers. When you use Add the first function is obviously not needed, only the second, which is why I suggested trying it. It may help determine where the problem is.

Isn't that just a Nikon RAW file? If so it should open if the camera used is supported by that version of LR. Not sure when Adobe quits updating older versions.

If the camera is new(ish) then the files would need to be converted to DNG!

No mate, i only just got the camera and i am waiting on my 55-300vr to arrive before i can start shooting again, mind you i still have about 500 files to work on in LR off my old 30D, so i guess i will keep busy( i dont wont to fall in the trap of - having a new baby to play with and loosing interest in my older 30d files):(

I believe that support for the Nikon D200 came with Lightroom 1, so with LR3 there should be no problem.

Lightroom 4 performance hit

I recently added another set of 4 GB each [8GB] to my computer making a total of 16Mb. I have noticed a slowdown when using LR4. Does this seem possible?

Did you make any other changes to your system or software? If that was absolutely the only change made then its obviously possible but I find it very unlikely although there could be some interaction effect. When I went from 12GB to 24GB of memory I didn't notice much of any change to LR5 but PS quit complaining of memory problems. I realize this isn't very helpful but it's at least a response.

I just received a post from a computer forum stating that my CPU in a 6 core use has been noted to affect performance in LR.

Interesting - i currently use LR4.4 and have an old siemens v5535 laptop, on this i only have 1.5GB of memory with just 1.25 available, and my LR is always slowing up and constantly windows wont work properly with it, i am looking to increse my memory but i believe 2GB is the maximum my lappy will allow, so possibly mine will allways struggle:cry:
