Thanks Tony very concise explanation that i can fully relate to, my laptop is a Siemens v5535 that is over 8 yrs old and i brought it 2nd/3rd/4th hand from a small retail outlet(you know the kind here today - gone tommorow) its very basic very slow gets very hot and normaly just shruggs its shoulders and has a paddy and goes into one of those frozen out ghost screens that can only be fixed by crashing or closing the windows.
It only has 1.5GB of RAM yat my LR4.4 takes up abot 75% of that not leaving mutch room for errors, even my wifes netbook has better graphics and more memory(2GB and can take 4) mine is limited at 2 max.

my reason for converting to a finished jpeg in LR is to save memory as im currently thrashing my 1.25GB memory with having over 500 Raws in there along with the jpegs. After i have worked a file and am happy that its as good as it will get, i save my raws to disc and just keep the jpegs.

Pagman, I'd like to explain a couple things about how computers work in case you don't already know. If you do know these things and I have misunderstood you, I beg your pardon.
First, the only time when a NEF file or a jpg file or any other file is using memory is when it is open in some program - a simple viewer or an editing program. When the files are in storage on your hard disk and not being actively used for something, no memory is involved, but the jpgs do use less disk space than the NEFs.

The jpgs take up less disk space because they are compressed down. But when you open a jpg, even if it is just to look at it, the first thing that happens is that the compression is reversed and the image data that goes into the RAM memory is full sized. Your 10 Megapixel image might be only 6 MB on the disk, but expanded in RAM it uses 29 MB of memory. That is because it is 24 bits per pixel. The NEF, on the other hand, is 15.8 MB on the disk and the same 15.8 MB in memory, because the NEF is 12 bits per pixel and not compressed so it is the same on disk and written into memory. (Canon Raws are slightly compressed but at that time Nikon was not compressing its RAWs.) So actually the jpg uses around twice as much memory as the NEF and puts twice as much strain on your limited memory. But if storage space on the hard disk is a problem, then the jpg is a better choice.

Umm...can you take a "stab" at the time you took the shot? LR can sort by the "capture time" (I believe it does this by default)...

Good luck!

In the Library module, in the toolbar under the image preview(s) there is a "Sort" option with a drop-down list. Open the list and "Capture Time" will be an option. Select it!

Lightroom 4 settings to Lightroom 5?

I have upgraded from LR4 to LR5. I still have both on my PC. Here is the issue:

When I open LR4 and view a photo (we'll call is 123.cr2) it's complete. I did a lot of cloning on this photo to remove a sign and some trash. When I open LR5 and go view photo 123.cr, the photo is far from complete. I would like to move the LR4 settings to LR5 so the photo is complete as I don't plan to keep LR4 on the machine forever.

My pc will only open 1 LR at a time, so I can not figure out how to copy settings :(

Thanks for any help you can offer with this

I'm by no means an expert, but when I upgraded to LR5, I imported my LR4 catalog into LR5. Not sure if you can, or would need to, be able to go back and forth. Some info here:

Interesting -- when you install the new upgrade/version, it would typically have given you the choice to work with the existing catalog and upgrade it. It would I believe have copied the catalog and worked with that (the old catalog would stay in your system until you decide you know longer want it).

So, the question is, when you installed LR5, did it pop up and ask you about the LR4 catalog? If not it seems strange!

At any rate, as Ken said, you can Import the old catalog and LR5 should pick up the LR4 processing. You could also try to just File/Open Catalog...there would likely be options as to handle things, look at each option that is given!

As to which is preferred, well, I'm not sure exactly how each approach is handled. One thing to consider: I believe if you go to LR4 and in the Library module select "All Photographs", then do a File/Export as Catalog... you then will get a separate catalog created which you then could either open in LR5 or Import as Catalog. That will keep the two catalogs separate.

I'm not sure how things would get handled if you just Open the LR4 catalog in LR5, so if you want to be sure of "keeping" the LR4 catalog untouched, then you could back it up before doing the LR5 Open! Lightroom has an option to back up the catalog "When Lightroom Next Exits" in the Catalog Settings dialog. Or, of course, you could just make your own copy of the LR4 catalog but rename it for LR5, keep it in the same directory, Open it in LR5, pay attention to the options, see what happens, report back here and be prepared to help others by sharing what you've learned!

Just updated to LR5.5 and I realised that the jpg files exported using the LR5.5 are now not readable by Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4 (same also for the earlier DPP3 version). Before the updating of the LR to 5.5, everything was running fine. I am running the 2 softwares on iMac and must say that the jpg files exported, however, are displayed correctly on iMac Finders.

Did I miss some crucial steps on the settings? Anyone any clue?

Many thanks.

I have just upgraded to LR5.5, now the softproof feature has stopped working.

When I press the "create proof copy" button, the message flashes up to say a proof copy has been created but I can not find it where it normally sits in my library.

Am I missing something ...

LR 5.6 update available.

From Adobe:
Lightroom 5.6 Release Notes

New Camera Support in Lightroom 5.6

Nikon D810
Panasonic LUMIX AG-GH4
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000
New Lens Profile Support in Lightroom 5.6

Please note – the profile for the newly added Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM lens is not automatically located when applying lens profile corrections. This is a bug and we will fix it in a future release. The workaround is to:

Manually select the profile and choose “Save New Lens Profile Defaults” in the Setup menu on the Profile tab. From then on, the lens should automatically select when the profile is enabled.
