There are links to pictures throughout the entire tutorial. What additional pics do you need?

step 2 where it was talking about selecting the gray channel. I didnt have a grey channel.

Ah, because you have a color image as opposed to B&W? Not sure about this then.

EDIT: Here is the answer given in the article.

Here's how you do it. In this example I use a monochrome image. To do the same thing on a color image I suggest you convert it to LAB color mode and apply this process to the L (Lightness) channel, which will sharpen the image without introducing color aberrations.

Yes, I've just tried to follow that tutorial, and got the same results as you're saying, but there is a fix. Try decreasing your radius until you're happy with results. It all depends on the pic resolution. I played with web sized image, and my radius works the best between 0.3 and 0.5.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Not sure whether my feedback is a help or a hindrence but the "red" makes me think of PS 'quick mask' in other words not the last step but still an imtermediate step?

:)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

I'm a bit limited in PS but maybe you need to merge them layers or something?

Since I was doing a color picture, I sharpen in lab mode in the lightness channel.
