about 5 weeks ago i headed on down to PA's Lounge (home of the horrible lighting) to check out a night of experimental music/improv/noise...first up was Hairy Pizza, who i think are some sort of offshoot of Sunburned Hand of the Man, w/ trumpet player Bhob Rainey sitting in. he's the only horn player i've seen who uses a wah-wah pedal.

gear used for this show was mainly the 17-55 and sigma 30; the 420EX was used as well for some shots.

#2 the sole guitar was abused

#3 this guy was playing some sort of electronic device w/ sliders

next up was Eloe Omoe, a thunderous bass/drums duo (didn't get a good shot of him, but the drummer wears the type of ear protection you'd see airport runway guys use).

last was headliner hototogisu, the duo formed by UK'er Matthew Bower (SKullflower, Total, Sunroof) and Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards, Zaimph). they killed the stage lights, brought out two bunches of burning incense sticks, and set their instruments to jet engine roar. lovely drones and over-harmonics buzzed around and settled into yr brain.

#5 (matthew and marcia)

#6 (matt was always facing away from the audience)

#6 (mental preparation, before the playing started)

#7 if it's got strings, it can be bowed

You will get the medal of valor for daring to go into this place again, let alone grab off these brilliant tidbits of the universe! #6 ... y'a got the 'mental' part right!

These really are nice images...this is the kind of thing that makes me want to photograph music, going where no respectable photographer would dare or care to go to capture some truly unique moments. I love the 'mental preparation' shot. (you have 2 #6's btw):D

i ran out of fingers. ;)

thanks for the comments, much appreciated. it's certainly not the easiest place in the world to shoot, but i do like documenting very sub-underground bands, and it was an excellent evening of outsider music.
