I found this googling around. Does anyone know what X1 and X2 stands for? Where did they get the 65535 from? I am really curious to know how many actuations my 5D has.

The rule "X1*65535 + X2" seems to be valid for: 5D, 1D, 1Ds and the markII.
The 10D, 300D, Digital rebel do not use the 0x0093
The 20D, 350D, Digital rebel XT use a different rule: 10000*INT(X1/6400-1)+X1 and $3F)*256+X2

Heres the full link:

If anyone can help, that would be awesome!! I think a lot of people here would be interested to know for the non 1-series cameras as well. :D

The easy part is where 65535 came from. It's the largest value that can be represented by a 16 bit unsigned binary integer. The rest ???

Unfortunately, that information is misleading. All that you will determine is the number that is displayed when you review the photo in the camera (135-3502, for instance). That label gives the folder number and IMG number. It is not a shutter count.

There is no shutter count in the EXIF for cameras below the 1-series.

AFAIK, the software only works with the 1D series cameras. It's called CanCount.

Unless you have a 1D of some kind, the only way of finding this out is via Canon's closely-controlled diagnostic software. If you do have a 1D series, you can read it from the EXIF as noted in this thread, or buy CanCount, or download the free utility that FoxBat has written.

Man alive. I am scratching my head looking for the CanCount of my 5D, and this info just saved me from going bald.

So I assume, based on the age of this thread and the lack of other threads that you still can not get a CanCount off of a 5D? (PM me please)

That is correct; no shutter actuation count for any camera other than 1Dx series..

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

I only have a 450D, but I downloaded a utility that showed shutter count, I believe. I even tested it by unplugging the camera and then taking a few shots and plugging it back in, to make sure it wasn't just spitting some number out.

Yeah I don't think us 5D owners have any options. The way I see it, a new shutter assembly will probably cost less than the cheapest of lenses (or the same) (minus the 50 1.8 of course)

What is the official canon rating 100k or 150k?

According to kenrockwell.com:

Shutter: 30s - 1/8,000 without flash. 1/200 maximum with flash in the usual modes. Bulb counts up seconds on the top LCD during exposure, up to 999 seconds (15 minutes). Canon claims "durability tested" and "shutter life" of 100,000 frames, which is not a guarantee. Pro cameras tend to claim about 150,000 cycles and cheaper cameras don't say. No big deal, at least Canon has the guts to list a number.
