We know that Lightroom won't import the jpeg if its in the same folder as the RAW image...

I was wondering if anyone knew of a utility, or script that could search through a directory tree for files with same name (but different extensions) in the same folder, then create a subfolder there, then move the jpegs to that folder automatically?

(Actually, now that I think about it, I probably don't want to do that... it'll really screw with my Elements organizer... but something like that may be useful for future shoots where I shoot RAW+Jpeg... (or I suppose I could just wait for LR team to fix that.)

In either case I thought something like that might be useful for those of us LR users who still sometimes shoot Raw+Jpeg.

Here is some food for thought. Have you tried to rename your jpeg files using Elements? Maybe use it to rename to the crrent filename plus _jpg. Can you search for all photos with a *.jpg search tag. Then Elements will know of the new filename, and you could also Import into LR. On new shoots choose to Import from Files rather than from the CF card. Here you get a windows view and can list be file type, Import your RAW files first with your name changes (if any for your RAW files). Then you could do another import for your jpegs via the same method, but this time rename with the _jpg ending for your files.

Thanks... hadn't thought of that, I'll have to give it a try. Should have known you would come up with something. :)

Best solution, of course, would be a Lightroom Library that did this automatically, so I'm getting a little ancy waiting for version 1.1 to see if they address the Library issues I have... that way I could in the future dump the organizer aspect of Elements in favor of LR's.

I know... just thought I had to throw that in there... I'm almost getting tired of hearing myself request these library features, and explain why... both here and in the other forum I see you at.

Well, didn't get too far... turns out Elements 3.0 doesn't have very good renaming capability... I can only give a base filename for selected photos, and it then numbers them in a series... (I would prefer to keep my own filenames, but add a _jpg before the extension.)

I know I could do this in other software, but then my links for Elements will be lost... was a good idea, though. I'm guessing that I wouldn't even had to import them seperately into Lightroom, since they would have been different filenames from the RAW.

Bummer. Well the idea would work for new imports maybe.

It's weird, actually.. when I import my photos into Lightroom from my Xti, it imports the jpgs and ignores the RAW files...?

Are you downloading directly from the camera? If so, get a card reader. Otherwise you have to use the EOS utility to have the ability to download RAW files.

That's kind of what I did. I didn't use Elements though. I completely gave up on importing from Elements and decided to import everything into LR from scratch. I have some Canon P&S .jpgs that had the same sequence number as some of my XTi raw files - in the same months... So I used a program called ExplorerXP which does a great job of file re-naming and added a PS to all of those .jpg files. Then imported into LR.

Yeah, at the moment I'm going straight from the camera. I'll try the card reader thing, that could certainly be my problem. Thanks for the suggestion!

I just stumbled on this... Does anyone know if this is an issue with the new Lightroom update? Or has it been fixed?
