I've recently purchased a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 from a fellow member of this site and bought a 1.4 teleconverter.

This more than meets my needs at the moment but have thought about getting a Sigma 2xconverter in the future but have heard that it degrades IQ.

My question is how noticeable is the IQ degradation as it would be handy to have the 400mm reach when needed?

Thanks,

Brian

Surely someone must have used this combination and can comment on the difference in IQ when using the 2x converter and the 1.4 converter? :D

I don't have any images on this computer to post or link too, and if I did, I haven't figured out how to do that yet! BUT--I have that lens and both Sigma T-cons--all pre "DG" coating. I have no issues with what I get, but then I don't expect to get bare lens IQ when adding the T-con. It is a compromise that I can live with and it's not all that bad. I have taken some pretty good shots with both TC but the 2x really needs a monopod at a minimum. It's really a nice, inexpensive way to get a long constant f/5.6 aperature lens. OTOH, I normally leave my 2x at home unless I know I will be shooting far away with support. Purists will jump in I'm sure and say it won't compare with a 300mm f/2.8 prime and they are right--but I'm not spending that kind of money--I'll buy a new dirt bike first--much more fun-factor for me!

Best thing to do is go to a store and try the 2x, outside if they will let you, on a monopod. I have dabbled shooting deer with mine, but my 20D shutter is way too loud and scares them off. (I shot a freind's Nikon D80 yesterday and it was wisper quiet!).

I believe IQ with the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and a 2x T-con will be somewhat less than a Sigma 50-500, but then you can shoot at a higher shutter speed in lower light at the long end with the T-con on the 70-200 than you can with the 50-500. 50-500 is my next lens, and yes, I plan to use both my T-cons with that ones as well.

Rudy M.---Thanks to this site, I'm learning something new all the time!

Many use it and are quite happy with the results. I had one with my 70-200 and would say the results are acceptable for sure. There's some posts around here somewhere.

Thanks both. I now feel safe asking the missus for it as a present now that I can tell her it won't make my photographs any worse than they already are.

Much appreciated.

Cheers Bagtagsell. The IQ degradation does look quite noticeable in those shots.
