Another review of the V2, and my first ever off-camera flash experience.

The flash seems to misfire a few seconds after the flash itself is initially turned on, but after that, it fires every time without fail.

The range is great indoors and it even works through walls. Outdoors, it's even better. I couldn't make it NOT fire in my backyard. Yeah, I know I need to water my lawn :). Now granted, I've only had it for a few hours, but for $34 shipped from Hong Kong, I'm happy.

Just went all out and got me a set of these, after looking at the 16 channel triggers the problems that have come with miss firing etc put me off them. I like the V2 because its got hotshoe mounts, its seems to work well outside, its much cheaper than Pocket wizards, everyone seems pleased, it doesn't misfire.

Just got to wait 10days i think for them to come! woop woop! Ill post another mini review then. :)

I do not like the V2 because it does have a hotshoe mount.

Most off camera users eventually gravitate to a lightstand with an lightstand/umbrella adapter.

When this is done, the length of the V2 hotshoe radio slave receiver with the hotshoe receiver (and simular units), pushes the flash too far away from a centered position for the flash (a hotshoe based flash already inhibits this).

I think the radio slave receivers with the 1/4 phono plug and a thin flash hotshoe to PC adapter is a better choice for most (in the long run).

The hotshoe based radio receiver units also use a more obtuse 3 Volt battery, and not the more readily available (and much less expensive) AA or AAA cells.

Enjoy! Lon

Good point for most of my work however its not possible to set up light stands and umbrellas as its normally just on the side of a drop off, jump etc (Mountain bike photography).

The V2 does also have the sync port built in however so you can easily add a sync cable to your flash gun to reduce the height, this is an advantage as you can now have both.

The version i have purchased you can use a rechargeable 3volt battery, which cost only £2.99 from another eBay shop! The batter in the transmitter is also supposed to be able to take 20,000 shots per battery so i should be ok for a while on that end. It is true that the AA, AAA version would be more ideal battery wise, however it still misfires with the canon flashes i believe from the reviews i have seen, the V2 doesn't.

I ordered the original one last year. When I read about the new 'v2' on strobist, I ordered asap. I got mine this monday, and tested it out offically last night 'indoors'. Worked like a charm with my 580ex. I tried it down the hallway, (around 30') and it worked fine, but started to cut out closer to the end of the house. Closer, and thru walls, it works fine.

So far I'm 'ubber' happy, mainly due to the price. I still want a PW so I can get ETTL, but for now, this works for me. I ordered two receivers with mine, so when I get another 580ex I'm set. Now just to get an umbrella/stand.

A concern of mine as well but for stability reasons .. a workaround is to use the supplied sync to hotshoe adapter to eliminate the receivers function as a base. Then secure the receiver to the stand like you would a PW.

I have not tried it but does it sound OK?

I generally use mine with a garden variety PC male - hotshoe adapter. Flash goes on the adapter, cord plugs into receiver and it's light enough to just hang there.

Pocket Wizards will give you nothing more than basic sync, just like the ebay radio slaves.

Pocket Wizards will not give you any ETTL function.

Enjoy! Lon

But, I also like to avoid using the unreliable PC connecton.

I like to go straight from the very reliable 1/4 phono plug to an adapter cable that has the needed flash connector on the other end.

It is the 1/4 phono plug that I see as the highly desirable feature on the "non hotshoe" ebay radio slaves (it is an extremely reliable connection). And the ebay radio slaves with the hotshoe do not have the reliable 1/4 phone connection.

Enjoy! Lon

Lon, I've seen couple mods on the version 1 of this tigger, where the guy took out the PC port and replace with a 1/8 mono jack. From the look of it, the version 2 has same layout as version 1, so adding a 1/8 jack shouldn't be hard to do.

Probably more elegant solutions but this shows it works:
