The 420 has no manual power adjustment, not a good candidate for off camera flash.

Thanks to the great information on this thread, I have ordered a V2 kit along with a hotshoe adapter so I can solidly mount my 430EX to my tripod.

I just got the v2 kit and have had some problems with random fires and misfires. I later found out that it you have them to close to each other that it will cause misfires.

Humor me this: I bought a Hama hotshoe adapter from B&H so that I could avoid mounting the flash to the receiver because of the complaints that it is flimsy. However, there is no "mounting screw" to tighten the adapter like there is on the bottom of the flash, so it just flops around in the tripod mount/base that I am going to attach to the tripod. What can I do to attach it firmly?

There are flash hotshoe adapters that have a 1/4" -20 screw in the bottom, but the Hama unit does not. Can you return the Hama unit?

The Kaiser flash hotshoe adapter is getting a lot of good reviews on "Strobist" and it has a 1/4" -20 tripod screw hole in the base of the adapter. A 1/4" - 20 screw hole will mate directly with a almost all tripod screw studs (there are a few 3/8 -16 here and there).

Enjoy! Lon

OK someone please help me. I believe someone on this thread does the speedlite mods for the little triggers... I actually had a very competent person do my soldering for me and the trigger works fine but when I set my flash back in regular mode (i.e. "off" position rather than "slave") my flash will not work. The other day it was really doing something weird. Once every little while, it would just pop off a flash by itself when it was attached directly to my 5D (again in the "off" mode) and my radio trigger off and no where around.

Can someone please give me some recommendations to try of if I can send it to someone to look at even would be great.

Thanks,
Matt

The worse aspect of the Canon 420 with respect to off-camera use is that it times out (hiberates) after 90 seconds. There is no way to turn this "feature" off. Same problem with the 380.

I was about to ask this question but you've raised it, can you turn off this feature on a 580EX II. The manual only states you can turn off the auto-off feature via a custom function when the strobe is in slave mode. Obviously when firing the flash off camera via the V2, it's in Manual mode.

Thanks in advance..

Darren

I have the 580EX (not the II) and the auto-off can be turned off for it. My interpretation of the manual is that the 580EX can also turn off the auto-off for the 420EX when the 420EX is slaved to the 580EX. But this does not seem to hold true after the 580EX has been switched to manual -- that least that is my experience.

So when using the 420EX and 380EX with the Cactus V2, I have to turn the flashes off and then on again every 90 seconds (or else remember to press the V2 transmitter test button regularly). Sometimes this is a problem and sometimes not but I'd sure like to turn off that "feature".

I can get 1/180 max sync speed. 1/250 I get black in frame. Has anyone managed better with 580ex? If so, how?

I get black on the bottom of my frame at 1/250 as well. No biggie, it still works really well for me and setup is easy.

Stuff..

Any idea if this will work with a Canon 350D (Rebel) because I looked at it but couldn't figure out where the sync cable went on my camera.

:(
