I shot Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees at a Boys of Summer tour - these are from the House of Blues in San Diego - shot with a 20D, a Tamron 28-300mm and 580EX:

Looks like good lighting... Why the flash?
Nice expression in #3 and 5.

It really wasn't as light as it appeared to be in there. It was fairly dark and the lighting on the stage was multi-colored. In addition to that, I was scared to shoot without a flash as I don't feel my technical abilities were sufficient - I'm working on it though. Do you really think they look bleached out from the flash? I was fairly pleased with the exposure and the skin tones.

There are a few shiny spot on the face caused by the flash.
I don't think being 'bleached' is the problem (apart from the audience in #2). The problem is that the light is coming from the camera. So there is no depth created by the lighting. Same as shooting someone with the sun straight behind you.
There is a reason most studio portraits are shot with the flash about 45 degrees to the side. More shape, because there are shadows created by the lighting.

No #1 has the benefit of being backlit by stagelighting. This makes the image a lot more interesting then the others (light wise)...
