I have such a hard time with proper exposure and Bird Pics. The following was shot at ISO 200, f2.8 at 200mm. center weighted metering. What else could I do up front ? Too much noise ! Thanks... ;)

Um, you actually should be proud of this shot! Even with the thin DOF most is in focus, the color is vibrant and the eyes have catch light...

Thanks ! Just wondering if I'm expecting too much out of 30D ? Love the shot, except for the noise.

A bit of noise reduction will make you happier...

Just trying to improve upfront skills to avoid the pp. ;) I didn't have much light. Hince the f/2.8. Thanks for commenting Joayne. The crop is about 70%.

I think your exposure is right, especially on a bird that's mostly black. My usual birding setup: ISO-160, Spot metering, Center focus point, Servo, F/5.6, AV mode and the exposure is 0 or +1

Thanks Janika. I'll try the servo again. I was in AI Focus. I did have a few shots at f/4.0 & 5.6 at ISO 400, but the noise just stunk...

I'm not a fan of ISO400, especially with the 30d - unless you're shooting raw or in a really well light area it always looks noisy to me.

I've been using spot metering for months now and LOVE it... and I switched to AI Focus also. Things have been pretty good. My 30d prefers -1/3 comp all the time.

I'm guessing the crop may be part of the problem... you might also want to try 480x640 or 500x700 MAX for image sizes. Give Neat Image a whirl too..

Randy, with a 70% crop, you're bound to make excessive noise visible. That's not a bad photo at all considering that crop factor. I found that with 200 mm, I needed to be awful close to the bird to avoid having to crop too much. IMO, it's not the 30D that is at issue here. Good luck!

If you haven't downloaded the free demo plug-in of NeatImage you're denying yourself a great tool in noisereduction technology. It's not difficult to use and would really clean up shots like this one (which is a GREAT pic, by the way!).

I hope you don't mind, but I downloaded your shot and ran it through NeatImage. Took about a minute from this site to Adobe and back. Whatcha think?

Wow-that NeatImage really cleans up a shot! The original shot is terrific, just noisy due to distance and crop.

Very nice shot. Guess it's time to explore NeatImage. I have CS3 enroute so I'm anxious to see what the combo will do.

Personally I would shy away from center weighted or spot meter and learn how to use evaluative with proper EC in different situations. I used to use those some and they just don't work well for bird photography IMHO. You probably underexposed the image. A 30D 200 ISO should be close to noiseless!

Here is a link to a ISO 200 20D shot from a couple years ago. I looked at all my shots and there is not any noise at ISO 200. You are bumping up expose in PP I think?
