Was just messing around in USM, changing levels until I liked what I saw. Did I overdue it? Is there a sure fire method that works pretty well everytime?

Thoughts? I think the original image looks too soft/dull. I like the edit better. At least on my monitor. ;)

Why not share them with the community ? There seems to be a influx of new members and I am sure those new to Photoshop would benefit.

I'm sure he will. But he needs the original to work with for best results. :)

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Try this action:

You might also Google "high pass sharpening action." I downloaded one and it was great, but I can't remember where I got it.

I am not on my calibrated monitor right now but I think there is some more detail that needs to be revealed. Too much of the butterfly/flower seems to be dark. Your edit did reduce the dull look but it still needs more work. I am sure Cosworth will have a lovely edit for us.

Thx for this -- Are you using CS2 Smart Sharpen at all?

Thanks for your feedback! Here's what Cosworth did to the image:

I left the exposure alone, colour alone etc.

My sharpening action is pretty long. Two passes of USM, resize for web then a specific sharpen after that.

"batch sharpen" is the action in question.

If you don't wanna mess with the action try this:

USM pass one: 200, 0.3,0
USM pass two: 15,100,0 (contrast!)

Resize for web: Bicubic only

Once resized, another light USM pass: 100,0.3,0

Cosworth's sharpening looked pretty good but i wanted to see what I could do with more than just sharpening. I used the original posted here, not a full res file.

I opened the file in Lightroom and did the following:

Exposure: -.24
Recovery: 60
Fill Light: 28
Blacks: 1

Vibrance: 8

I also cropped to put more emphasis on the butterfly.
I then sent the file to CS2 and applied two passes of USM as follows 85, 1.0, 2 and then 15, 20, 0. Saved in Image Ready.
