Dose any one think this image is any good? It is unfortunate that the left hand is out of focus. But other then that? Oh and I really wish it had been full body. I got to get a wider lens as I find myself way to close these days. This was shot with a 50 1.4 and if anyone is interested this is the lead guitarist from Everclear.

I can certainly understand why you like it ... it has a lot of positive characteristics: mood, interesting angle, interesting & arty pose, I really like the tuning knob and hair highlights even though there are a few folks here who always jump on "burnout". The down side is that it is soft and a little too dark ... and it would work much better if it was full body with some sense of standing on a stage or other sense of place ... as it is he could be walking down the sidewalk in the middle of the night and the light could be moonlight (well, perhaps not really) or a street lamp. So, it is interesting but not portfolio material even if a lot of people (who aren't buying your images) like it a lot! :-)

I feel bad now for commenting on the brightness of the white (thanks Dwight ;) ), i think the hair is ok, but personally i find the tunning knobs a lil distracting.
Sorry.

NO, no, it is invaluable to have a range of opinions and points of view. Please, never feel badly about disagreeing with me or me disagreeing with you. Think of how blah the world would be if we all agreed all the time. Heck, I go out of my way to disagree with Rene most of the time. And I like the tuning knob glow better than the hair! :p

That would be me ;)
I'd try to recover the blown hair if shot RAW.
Also, I'd make the BG totally black (I can just see a line and someone(?) in the BG on the left)

I think it's pretty neat actually. Looks sharp in the face (hard to tell on this size really)
I like the angle & motion blur in the hand. Very nice that you can just see a line of light along the legs.
I don't think that a full body shot would have been better. The crop is nice as is. (Except that it isn't 2:3 ratio) But I woulnd't crop top or bottom. (Not often that I say that)

I have to agree with René about making the background all black. Im a huge fan of backlit/rim imagery when it comes to live music photography. I've only ever managed it once myself, so when i see others get it, im impressed.

(edit.. i know it isnt actually back lit, but im referring to the area around his mouth)

No, no, don't be sorry about agreeing with me. Think how bitter and unkempt the world would be if we all always disagreed with each other!:lol::lol: Sorry, I couldn't resist!

BTW, I think the cure for missing the best shot when shooting brackets is to set the "as metered" image to go first and then the brackets ... as soon as I get a chance I am going to change my firing order and reduce to three images to a set from five.

You do realize that you have changed many significant processes in my image capture flow don't you? So my real question is, "Are my images any better as a result?" ;)

I like the shot, given it's issues with hot highlights. What I cannot get past is the purple fringing due to chromatic aberration. It's on the turning knobs, as well as the hair, and face (near his nose).

Maybe a conversion to B&W would get rid of that...or you will have to play with individual color channels, to correct it.

Otherwise, it's nice and definately shows the mood.

wow such a wide range of comments, I love it. I posed the question not because others had liked it, but because I was looking to see how to make it better with out actually asking. The original was not as dark, and I was playing in the exposure and dropped the gamma and thought it looked kind of cool with the white highlights. The purple/blue tints I actually created by raising the red and blue channels just to add a touch of colour to an otherwise almost black and white image. Thank you all for the comments.

I forgot to add that it was shot at 3200 ISO.

Why just one. Because I was not happy with the set. The lights were horrible and I had to shoot mostly at 3200. And I have been sick and have no ambision to try to work with any of them. :(

Here is the set, it is quite a small set but the stage show was quite boring. I just want to choke the band members when they just stand there like a zombie with an ice cream cone in their mouth. Oh well, life goes on till the next band rolls through town. On the bright side I get to shoot a WWE event locally at the end of the month, guess I will get my action fill with that. ;)

Having read all of your; agree.. disagree.. comments... I must be blunt this time...and at least, to cut through the formalities of niceness, say;..:p

Neah... I don't like it... The smeared glare of the knobs is very distracting, and kills the image right up front... :(

I like the composition, the mood, and the framing (even with the feet missing)... but the softness of focus and the darkness plus the glare would make me want to Post Process this a lot...:D
