The Green Back Heron (Little Green Heron) is one of my favorites to photograph. These guys are small when compared to other herons. The only time I am able to get close to them is when they are looking for food. This little heron flew to several different perches this morning watching the water and grabbing a few. The sun had not made it up past some shade trees, so the light was even and somewhat filtered. The size of the herons pupils gives an idea of the light levels. All of the shots were with 20D with 100-400IS L with natural light. All are full frame images.

Very sweet Keith. I'm glad to see someone else isn't afraid to use slow shutter speeds. ;)

The slow shutter speeds were used because of necissity. The sun was low in the sky and behind dense trees. These guys seem to like it that way...I did not want to go higher than 400 with the ISO, and I did not really want to shoot the 100-400 wide open...so slow speeds were in order. A tripod was out of the question because of the location and stalking these guys....I guess it worked..:)

Good stuff Keith! I'm with Ted, these are intense and leave me wanting to see the GH make its move.

I too wanted to get him snatching up the little fish that he was catching, but the light forced me to used slow shutter speeds at times which resulted in blurry heads. He did not stick around in one place very long and any movement by me would cause him to jump further away. It was an experience watching this little guy that I enjoyed. At one point, he jumped withen a foot of me and all I could do was admire his beauty since he was just to close.

Great shots, Keith. Not sure I've even seen a green heron IRL. Makes me want an IS lens even more, and to learn how you're using it so well.
