Creating that Soft Focus effect? Adobe elements

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how I can achieve that nice soft focus effect whilst taking portrait style photographs? Unfortunately I don't have one of those custom soft focus lenses, I guess I could buy a screw on filter. But in the last month I've bought the 10D, a Packard Bell laptop, some studio flash equipment and yesterday a remote infrared flash transmitter. So I think I'll have to see what adobe elements can do for me, otherwise my good wife may shoot me (not with a camera either!!!).
